Title: VCU bearings
Post by: V8MoneyPit on December 31, 2008, 10:15:37
Hi all

2001 TD4 3dr....

Can anyone tell me the part number for the VCU bearings? Or the bearing size, etc definition so I could get them from a bearing supplier?

A loud rumble has developed in Sarah's Freelander. It seems to be coming from the very middle of the car sort of between the front seats. I'm assuming VCU bearings. But if anyone has other ideas, I'd be interested to hear them.

I hadn't driven the car for ages and got in it just before Christmas and the noise was crazy. Why she hadn't noticed, I cannot imagine

TIA.

Hi Steve
don't make the mistake I did, I purchased a pair of pattern ones (britpart i think) from JSF, and to be fair they did warn me they were not good but I was going to sell the old girl at the time.  Now some 6 months later they need doing again.  I will fit genuine this time as the originals lasted 109k miles and the new ones lasted 4k.

Not too badder job however getting the UJs of the VCU can be a little testing, I had to dismantle one UJ to use a set of hydraulic pullers on it.  Still should come apart easily this time.

The great thing is you can still drive a freeby with the rear prop removed, which means you can take your time.

If you want to chat Mutz has my number

Regards

Tony

TOQ000040 up to chassis # 1A 999999

TOQ000060 from chassis # 2A 000001

Though I have a feeling they supercede to one of the numbers above

While you are under there - check the centre diff mount

Thanks guys. I'll get some on order next week.

The last time it was in for service I asked them to check all the mounts, but I'll check them again.

Got some genuine GKN bearing assemblies for just over £30 + VAT each and they are now fitted. What a difference  The car is quiet again. Well relatively, anyway
