I have a Defender 90 that when off roading the power steering boils up and I get power steering when I turn right but not when I turn left. I have fitted a recon power steering box and the fluid is new. the only thing I have not changed is the pump but then I figure that if it boils then it must be pumping!
This cools back down and things turn to normal :azn: :undecided: :undecided:

Mine does the same, have changed fluid but just the same, it's working much harder at lower speeds offroading and has no oil cooler...it is a land rover after all..I just live with it........not so bad on the wetter sites

i had a simlialr problem with mine
driving to italy my fluid turned to pink foam and blew out teh breather all down the side of the car
then a pipe failed, i kept changing the fluid but it just went pink and foamy
anyway changed the pump, its a TD5 so the pump and water pump share the same drive, when i took the PAS pump off the water pump was all gooey and rusty and then i started leaking water, think water was seeping into the pas pump somehow, anyway both were changed and the problem solved
maybe someone with more knowledge can explain better?

Sounds like they were both knackered. The PAS system is under pressure but a good dunking might see it off.
I've been following another thread about modifying the PAS system and some guys run oil coolers (bog brush) and/or swap the fluid for hydraulic oil which stands more pressure without boiling or cavitating. ATF isn't that special in the grand scheme of things.
