Title: Air con failure on Late TD4 Freelander 1
Post by: carbore on May 23, 2008, 12:23:23
Oh dear.

My TD4 (Late/BMW)  aircon has packed up.

I had used it a bit over the winter so not 100% sure its "lack of use seals" but its is a strong posibility, however.

Im not sure if its my imagination, but when it worked im sure when the air con button was pressed the fan noise changes to a "deeper" hum/stonger blow.  This does not seem to be happening but the buttons light does come on.

I did a quick visual check the two fuses that the owners manual says and they appear ok (need to multimeter them as well). Is there any other common issues to look for or random fuses etc.

The car is not used off road often (discounting my drive!) so its not been bumped or flooded.

Other wise its a trip to the dealer and im fail sure the warrenty has just expired!

I'm not sure if you can see it on the Freebie, but have a look at the pump and see if the clutch is engaging or not.  Some LR aircon clutches need a bit of a tap with a blunt object to dislodge them if they've not been used for a while.  This is the case in P38s and TD5 Discos but I'm not sure about Freelanders.

There's no point in taking it to a dealer - find a specialist aircon engineer who will be able to do it for a fraction of the price, and will actually know what he's doing.  I found a guy who will come out in a van and do it all there and then, he sorted mine out perfectly and saved me loads of money.
