Title: Royal Armouries
Post by: datalas on July 06, 2005, 08:35:34
Went round the royal armouries in portsmouth t'other weekend, and whilst like a berk I forgot to take the camera I can heartily recommend it to anybody who happens to be venturing down that way (it's free too)

The thing that did make me curious however were the largish seige weapons and cannons.  These things are muzzle loaded with a three foot wide ball of granite....  *how* ?

there's only four people you can fit round the thing and one of them would have to end up in the cannon..

still, sure they had their methods.

The parts of the Iraqi supergun they had there were impressive too, the thing is big enough to launch a bathtub to isreal...  quite why you'd want to do that is anyone's guess :?

I was at a conference in Leeds a couple of months ago.  There was a formal meal one evening in the Leeds Royal Armoury.  Very impressive collection of armour & a demonstration tounament fight by a couple of the historical interpreters, as they are called, dressed up in armour.  Well worth going too.  Cheers.

Yes, it's a damn fine place it is to visit as well, with the 'Hall Of Steel'
