Post by: stefan on August 05, 2003, 11:05:08
One of our female managers yesterday went out to her car to go home and thought it was a good idea to start the engine to let the air con cool it before she got in....................she started the engine..................forgetting she had left it in gear....................it shot forward, mounted the kerb, across a grass bank and in to a tree!!

Ripped out a wheel arch liner and damaged the front bumper, imagine what the company insurance bods are going to say?

Very funny, as nobody likes her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Caroline has done similar with our Xantia at the old house, got in turned the key and smack straight into the front of a Land-Rover luckily it just cracked the number plate.

Dyf,

I'd like to say I wouldn't be that stupid, but that would be tempting fate...................

That just the sort of thing Lynn would do. I am glad I didn't pay extra for air con now.

I'd just like to remind you fellas that both my vehicles (Disco and BMW) are currently in need of work due to the (lack of) driving skill of hubbs.

Bad driving isn't linked to any particular chromasome.

Mind you, what I can't understand is why anyone would turn the car on before getting in. Very trusting people round here...

Tina,

The chances of anyone 'unsavoury' getting in to where I work would be very slim!! We have the ultimate security on the front gates!! Can't say where, but there's lots of green Defenders driving around!!

Mind you come to think of it, the drivers of the afore mentioned Defenders are probably dodgy..................................................................

Well, not so long ago i was pulling out from the side of the road in my van (which was parked behind my Discovery) and for no reason, forgot to steer and hit my Discovery square up the back end,.
No damage to the Discovery but £200 quid worth of dents to a perfectly good transit.
Oh and everyone was watching.........ooppps!!!!.

Only accident in 22 years.

Gary.

My most spectacular accident (I've had 4 in 18 years of drving) was when I lost control on a bend and ended up in a field.
No, I wasn't going too fast; this is a notorious accident blackspot in the North East of Scotland, an S-bend that comes just after a cross roads at the end of a very long, very straight stretch of road. In fact, the straight bit got used for unofficial races. I was stuck behind a tractor turning right at the crossroads and almost stationary. I could not have been doing more than 35 - as you turn the bend the limit drops to 30. First bit curves to right - Frontera Sport (soft-top, very posey) keeps going and I end up in the path of an articulated lorry, correct the swerve and keep going the other way - through fence and into farmer's field. No-one hurt, £600 worth of scratches to my car and very concerned (for me) and understanding (didn't claim!) farmer.
Why did it happen?
2 weeks earlier I had needed new tyres - shouldn't have as it was only just over a year old. The standard Michelin for the frontera was no longer available and they replaced 2 - I was willing to do all 4 for saftey but they said 'not necessary...'
Independent assessment after the accident went on about the altered footprint of the new tryes (on the front) causing a conflict with the older ones. Came to nothing as neither Vauxhall nor Michelin would accept liability.
Moral? Don't necessarilly trust dealer service people. This put me off 4x4s and it took me 5 years to buy another - the Disco.
And, for the record, the other accidents were;

I had a Frontera sport, a sort of greeny colour.

No good for pulling the caravan, no torque from the 2.0 petrol 4 pot

I'm not going to tempt fate, but suffice to say that I've only had one accident which wasn't my fault; the traffic lights were on red! And the other 5 cars in front of me agreed; just a shame the one behind didn't!

First one - I hit a laguna from behind. Parked round a blind bend. Leaves on the road. My Clio RSi was on the way to being traded in. Ooops...

The second one had nothing to do with me... The result was a bent bonnet and a cracked headlight. An Isuzu double cab backed into me after I'd been following him for about half a mile, and had stopped about 30yds behind him when he pulled up and engaged reverse. There was a perfectly good parking space on the left, but he decided he wanted to park on the double yellows that I'd had to pull up on to let him do his manoeuvre <sp?> His response? Sorry mate - didn't see you. My Disco's the same size as any other TD5 Disco, and it was a lovely sunny morning...

Oh well, it's straight now, and the body shop even polished the scratch out of my wing...

Cheers

Ben
