Post by: Sharpshooter on April 12, 2004, 11:05:29
Hi, ive got to protect the underside of my 110 soon, and i wondered what is the best stuff to do it with? Is is WAX-OIL, or under body SCJULTZ or is there something else on th market that i dont need to take out a loan to use? Cheers :D  :D  :D [/b]

Waxoyl gets my vote.  Schultz / underbody stuff isn't as good and can trap water, making the problem of corrosion worse.

With waxoyl, you need to get it inside the chassis more than anything.  I tend to paint the outside of my chassis with hammerite, and touch it up when it gets scraped / scratched.

Title: Waxoyl

I am currently rust proofing my Defender, I have cleaned all the underneath and have just finished today putting Finigans No 1 on, I am going to start Waxoyling on Monday with one of these little sprays so I can let you know then.
The only problem I have found so far Is the odd hole I have found in what I thought was a very sound chassis, in for welding next week!

Many thanks for the advise on welding, I have left the appropriate parts clear to have welded and then treat afterwards.

I have just finished waxoyling, for the most of the underbody I have used a 3 ltr pressure pump from a garden centre, once the waxoyl was heated enough to be like water it went on a treat and I could get in all those out of the way places and inside the chassis. We have spent the longest time cleaning the floor, its very messy.

Park on top of a large cheap tarpaulin (the blue polyester(?) ones) before you start. Then throwaway or save for next time.

how much waxoyl did you need to use? And what was the total cost inclusing pump?

Missed the original thread.

If you go to a motor factors you can get a shultz gun with an adapter to spray waxoil. It has a length of plastic pipe that can be lengthened and stuck through the various holes in the chassis.

Title: Waxoil cost
Post by: Legionnaire on May 25, 2004, 11:59:57
I used the following:-

2 x 5 ltr Waxoil £29.08 total
1 1/2 ltr Finigans no 1 £21.00 total (for 2 ltrs)
2 ltr white spirit £1.87
Latex gloves £3.00/box
2 x Finigans no 1 spray £5.62 total

I bought a waxoil Jumbo spray £7.01 but didnt use it, I used a garden pressure pump spray it was so easy(it was in the shed at home, my wife hasnt missed it yet!!)

£221.00 for the rear cross member replacing and back of chassis repairs  found whilst preparing to waxoy which were unexpected costs but at least it looks better and the rear end wont come off next time I tow or am towed out (embarrasing or what!)

 Hope this helps

Andrew

Hi, i havnt done it yet  cos ive just moved. The pump and  2.5ltr of waxoyl, cost me about £30 from halfords. If youre going to use black oil then you cant use the small lance pipe which goes into the chassis. You can only use this with the clear one. This is because the black one contains bitumen. Cheers Wayne. :D
