i have just brought a 90 and i am breaking a rangie with some 24 spline axles
i dont know whether to change them for the 24 spline or leave the 10 spline on
i,m only going greenlaning and some slight off roading
so do i change them or leave them ? :-k
thanks kev

Swap them, then you'll get rear disks too and you can fit alloys safely. You will need to keep the 90 callipers though on the front and the radius arms are different too.
-
10 splines should be plenty strong enough for green laning and "slight off roading", but as andy says there are other benefits to swapping the axles over.
Before fitting the 24 spline axles, its a good opertunity to give them a refurbish with them off a vehicle.

On a similar line, I'm breaking a disco 300tdi, and I own a defender 110 csw with a salisbury rear on a 89 plate. Can I use the front axle from my disco along with the salisbury rear, are the gearing the same for the 10 spline and 24 spline axles??
-
yep

Having said all that, when 24 splines wear they become useless, they jump whereas 10 splines just get more backlash, so as Mr Barclay suggest strip them, clean them and check them. A good 10 spline will beat a goosed 24 any day.
-
I pondered the same thing as you but in the end I stuck with good ol' 10 splines. I must admit I did try to be interested when people started telling me about the different strengths and that certain axles had different cvs and......zzzzz....zzzz
Bottom line - I've broken 4 diffs both onroad and offroad. 10 splines are 10 a penny. 24 splines are not. Simple maths and sheer tight@rsedness won the day!!! lol

id keept the front axle you have now as its stronger than a 24 spline unit
and fit the 24 spline to the rear

10 spline on the front stronger than a 24 spline?, going down this road myself. was going to fit a 24 front and back...
-
not meaning to hijack the thread but someone mentioned different radius arms? I'd heard that early defenders had narrow bush arms and later ones had wide bush - are the arms different thicknesses too and are discovery/rrc the same as the narrow bush ones?
-
As far as I'm aware the radius arms are different for the different widths of bushes, but not 100% sure on that. There certainly wouldn't be much clearance between the radius arm and the bracket on the axle if the same width of arm was used with narrow bushes.
RRC up to 1985 used the narrow bushes, from 1986 onwards they used wide bushes
Defenders up to the 200TDi used narrow bushes, from the 300TDi onwards they used wide bushes
All disco series ones used the wide bushes.

I vaguley recall that the 200 TDi Defender CV joints are about he strongest that was fitted into a stock casing (ignoring the 101 then) so if you don't want to fit alloys then these are worth having.

Not as simple as that. The 24 spline diff is stronger but the CVs fitted to these are weaker.
Without a front locker fitted there is nothing wrong with a 24 spline front axle. IME a busted front CV is easier to change in the field that a diff....smaller and lighter to carry as well :)
You can mix and match 24 spline diff and early CVs (AEU2252 IIRC) with Ashcroft custom shafts. Best bet is to get the early hubs and swap the lot. This is the favoured setup for a locked front diff if you want to keep it 'reasonably' all Rover. :)

My front end has a locker and I run standard RRC internals, I'm just careful with them. One day they might snap but as someone has already said they are cheap (& I've a shed full).
Like Andy says it's better to have to swap a CV than a diff if you're in a hurry.

im running the 10 splines with locker and im not carefull, I broke 2 front shafts before i fitted the locker but previous owner loved to boot it out of junctions and twisted the shafts, I fitted none twisted shafts and a locker and not broken one yet,
however i carry spare shafts as i will break one at some point. 10spline shafts the pair cost me £20 --recently bought a replacement didnt check invoice cost me 30 quid but it is a nearly new, If it was going to be an issue i was going to buy GNK shafts for the front.
