TD5, you no good with spanners so there's no benefit to have the 300tdi for you

Yea but isnt the TD5 a tad troublesome ? im just thinking reliability for that same reason i aint no big deal with the spanners and i can afford to put it in my M8s garage when i get problems but i dont want to make him rich off my back

td5 has been around long enough for all known fault to come to light so there are no surprises really (oil in loom, leccy pump in tank spring to mind). Your more likely get a younger td5 engine than a 300tdi which are getting long in tooth and can have some major failings (timing belt shredding, lot of them suffer from alloy thread stripping throughout). You'd get a more powerful beast with the td5 and lots of top end poke where the 300tdi lacks big time. Can be chipped tuned if wanting more. Anti-stall feature for ye ol' legs. More greedy than a 300tdi on fuel though.

Thanks for that bundle of info M8 kind of confirmed what i had been   told, my thinking is that i would prefer an older but very clean 300tdi than a later TD5 thats knocked about and tatty, guess i will have to look at a few of each but defo leaning towards a 300tdi with good body /interior , poke is not high on my list  of things also have a thought for an auto box oh well some heavy browsing sesions are coming my way

Having had each engine I would say 300, we had a td5 and it would stall under its own weight pulling out of our drive, no bottom end at all. Great on motorways very smooth but with the big trailers it was nasty. The 300 however with a bit of a pump tweak  has only stalled once trying to pull out a  golf from a ditch and that was my fault not its. There also nowt for top end 70 is 70 even in a veyron and less lumpy tyres do make a smoother ride. So yeah get the tidiest 300 you can a 98 or poss 99 car or a restoration on a galvanized frame.

Good luck..

Is that the crossover years is it 98/99 ?, i had thought about starting with a new galvy chassis and having a 300tdi engine rebuilt to as new then swap add panels etc as it went along ending with something thats as new priced it up and wow allmost cost twice as much as just being patient and searching for a minter,

Yeah mine is really an s and as far as I can work out is in the last 3 thousand made before td5 i have seen a couple of tdi's on a t but not many. An other way to get a later one with tdi is ex military, but I don't know much about what and when with them.

As for galvanized your best letting someone else take the hit of building one...

We have had both disco and fender in tdi and td5 although the tdi disco was a 200 but it extends to both td5 needs a chip to get some low end either that or antistall.

Well i would say V8 Auto on LPG but that wasn't the question.

If i had the choice i would look towards a TD5. there are a nice engine and have lots of pulling power and when used to driving them then the stalling doesn't happen. (It sounds like it is revving more than it is. they idle at about 750RPM) Then there is the option of chipping to further remap the bottom end to make it less resistant to stalls and makes the pick up a lot cleaner.
Whilst i like the simple engineering like my 2.25 petrol in the IIA , the TDI just doesn't seem to have the go in standard form. yes i know they can be tweaked my mates comp safari motor is testament to that, but there is the price that it does run a little warm.
If it wasn't through cost then my current 90 project would go TD5 auto instead of V8.

I lose track, it was only awhile ago you was saying no more 4x4's and offroading allowed.

Correct M8 but as my medical condition changes so does my mindset, :rolleyes:if i buy another 90 its not for out and out offroading or even laning with groups  it would be just for the Spaniels and my shooting ,i drive the lanes everyday as part of my pest control work on the Plain anyway, i could probably make do with a estate car but dont think it would last long on those potholed tracks  :undecided:.

I love the 300 TDi right now because it runs on Bio without any problems, so a tank of fuel costs me £15 for about 500 miles (plus a saturday afternoon).

Praise the lard!
