Title: Diesel Pump Timing....

Engine blew up so pulled it out to find that the engine had seized doing 50 mph causing the big end to weld itself to the crank and then blow holes in both sides of the block!!

Anyway I have another 2 1/4 diesel engine and have had to transfer the injector pump. The manual says I need to set up the timing on the pump and you need a special tool (which I dont have!) Can it be done without this?

If not, where can I get one from?

all you have to do is line up the two timing marks.
on one of the three mounting holes, there should be a line. match that up with the line opn the engine. make sure you get it spot on.

I think the special tool they mention screws into the injector pump body . you can do without it but it is a bit trial and error . the tool is just a threaded rod with a turned down end . you can make one if you have access to a lathe ,or you can drill through a bolt ( with the right thread to fit the timing hole ) and use the drill as a dowel . Failing this you can just use a drill as a dowel but you have to try to centre it in the hole as best you can . Of course all this is 1" down a 3/8" blind hole . only turn the engine in its running direction , if you go past the mark , go round again . let us know how you get on .....Al

This is not a DIY job.  Have tried it and found it next to imposible.  
The special too is not worth the money for how often it will be used.  
Take it to a garage (prefrably one that is Landrover orientated) and get them to do it (may cost money but in the long term will save money).  Incorectly set timing on diesel can cause big problems later on.

Thank god i have a petrol!!!
Shame about the MPG but there you go  :evil:

I agree this is not an easy job but with a bit of patience it can be done . Land rovers ( especialy series ) are designed to be fixed anywhere and are relatively simple for that reason . If you are unsure what you are doing then a garage is a good idea . good luck with it anyway .

guess iam thinking of something else :oops:
is it not a case of lining up the keyed shaft into the engine and then lining up the timing marks?
ive never had to use a tool for the perkins or cummins.

Thats what I did :wink:  Then to fine tune it slacken  the pump at the base and slacken the fuel pipes and twist the pump by hand a couple of millimetres until the least smoke belches from the exhaust :wink:
