Post by: barriesheene on January 31, 2008, 12:44:49
Ok peep's i'm desperate  steering box has just started heamoraging fluid all over my drive  I cant see where it is coming from tho ? It must be from underneath the box somewhere ? Anybody know where i can get a seal kit from for it ? £200 + vat for an exchange recon unit from paddocks simply isnt an option at the mo  It's a 3.9 '89 V8 with the four bolt type box.
PLEASE HELP !

THEY LEAK CUZ THE BEARINGS ARE KNACKERED MOre than the seals, new seals last a day or so in most cases, new box mate much less aggro.

pah :-. last a few days indeed if it is just a seal leaking a seal kit will cure it, i did one and its been dry 2 years now IMO worth a punt over £200 of box, having said that sometimes a box is the only cure for the problem :D

Not something I know a lot about but maybe you can pull the bearings off if necessary?
To buy a bearing is not expensive and do them with the seals you should be sorted.

Hi m8 just looked on paddocks they do one fro 185 +vat but you will get 100 back when you return your old box so it is really 85 +vat with old box

That's what I thought, but then I looked at the title again and it says pump.

So Barry, pump (on the engine) or box (on the chassis)?  the later pump that you have it a sealed unit and not serviceable AFAIK, though you may get a recon one.  The steering box is designed to be rebuilt, though as said a leak ofetn indicates wear in the main shaft and bearing.  As it's a journal or plain bearing it's not an easy swap but worse than that it wears the main shaft a litle too.

S/H is an option for both though and you should be able to se what condition they were in, ie covered in oil=avoid.  TBH though don't look in a breakers, try the specialist dismantlers where the parts might be off-the-shelf, you should ask for a guarantee if they are.

I'd not even consider the kit,
I've done a few over the years and so's my mate who works in an auto transmission engineering place and they don't last.
It's cheaper in the long run to buy a recon box.
Craddocks are usaully the dearest place to buy anything!
Check out some of the ads in the mags.
Cheers,

I wish....... It's £300 upfront for the recon box then they refund you £100 when they get your old box back  Sorry for the confusion in the title guy's it's the box that is leaking , not the pump

£185 plus vat, with £100 cash back for your old steering box.  If the drop arm won't come free or it needs s new balljoint then get the one with the drop arm for about £20 more.

If you have another car it's easiest to take the old one in with you, I left it far too late when I did mine and din't get the deposit back.

Thank's for the link RRB  I didnt realise that they did them with the drop arm. Funnily enough it was noted at the mot that the ball joint was on it's way out

Steering box removal  What a [person of questionable parentage] of a job   Just spent two hours trying to drain and undo the bloody thing when it started to [throw it] down  So far undone pipe work and steering rod from the drop arm and thats about it !!! TWO HOURS that took. I cant for the life of me see how to get it out tho. It wont come up because of the rad hose and aircon pump and it dont look as tho it'll come from below either  :-k Gonna spend an hour reading the book of confusion  [-o< I found where the leak is tho. It's pouring out from where the steering rack goes into the box.

If you have air conn it's 10 time worse.

Remove the steering drag link, 4 chassis bolts, the tie-bar completely and the panhard rod, then shove the thing towards the engine and it will fall off the chassis rail.  Then you can wriggle it out downwards.

Lifting it back in takes 3 hands, make sure you've had your weetabix

I've just changed the output shaft seal on mine, maybe you can use the same method on the input shaft seal? I drilled the seal on two opposite sides, and screwed in self tapping screws. This then gave me something to pull the seal out by. The new seal was fitted using plenty of ATF for lubrication. So far there's no sign of any leaks.  :D
