THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR COMMENTS.
Can any of you guys give me your oppinion on whether I should buy a Diesel or Petrol Discovery for off road use. Thanks all. :?:
-
V8 burbleburble but preferably with lpg cos they cost a fortune in fuel ,I know i got one :D
-
Diesel - less worry through the water and you don't run out of fuel so quick
-
My view follows:
Diesel
Diesel
Diesel
Diesel
Diesel
......not petrol
-
sorry to become all unopinionated and stuff...
what are you wanting it for, are you wanting auto or manual? how far will you be travelling, what sort of money are you wanting to spend, and what's your driving style like ?
-
answer the questions and the the result will still be -
wait for it......
...Diesel
-
not if one of the replys is "overtake an asthmatic ant with heavy shopping"

I'm detecting a slight negativity towards the diesel engined option here :-k
Either that, or the ants where datalas lives are bloody fast

V8 :(vamp):
-
V8
V8
V6
Darn .. I think I love petrol!!!!!
-
Diesel...... nice and simple
-
\:D/ C'mon the v8's \:D/
although i am goin to the dark side by buying a tdi as i need to get back n forth 2 my work without it costin £30 a day
-
Overtake them run the little [!Expletive Deleted!] over that why we have big tyres and at least we can squash more ants per mile than a V8
-
I guess I should even up the balance a get a petrol as I already have a diesel.
-
LPG =29.9 pence per litre
4.0lV8=200bhp
I've never got stuck in water (due to the engine), it's an overstated problem, the army wade with V8s up to the roof! Plus if you get water into a Diesel, just leave it and walk home, you won't want to see the repair bills.
V8 sounds cool
V8 is b****y quick
V8 is nicely tuneable
AND if that wern't enough, you can drop 2 valves on a V8 and still exceed 70mph.
And it looks nice
And it's lighter, so it handles better
ANd it doesn't stink, ruin your shoes or go all over your hands at the pumps
Diesel is 89.9 p/litre at some garages, it's a crime!
-
Having just spent a minor fortune on a 270bhp v8 for the Disco/future project I'd better say petrol.....
........but for general use it'd have to be diesel.
Or am I just being no help at all!
cheers

Yes, you should :-)

Nice, simple answer Tim 8) If I am REALLY honest I only drive my tdi (impressive as it is really) because I can't afford to keep/run a V8. If I could justify the fuel bills there would probably be offers made (and refused  ) to take on a certain special motor
-
The slightly less simple answer is that neither is "better".. they are different, and unless you have some very specific requirements in the sort of events you are looking to do then either type will do you just fine.
Each has pros and cons no matter what the various evangelists say ;-)
Go looking for a vehicle rather than an engine, and make the decision based on what is available. You won't go far wrong with a V8 or a Tdi provided the vehicles are all in good nick and they have some service history.
If you neglect either type of engine, they will suffer and will plague you with problems.
Hope that helps..

Some good comments in here but for low down torque, cooler running, reliability, economy it has to be a diesel - it has it all.
....and you can tweak one for a bit more power
and you can add lpg to a diesel as well for extra economy etc.....
mind you a v8 does sound nice
ps I like diesel
-
If you ever need to make hooligans in cavaliers mess their underwear by chasing them uphill fully loaded, with 7 people on board, at speeds of up to 96 mph (err... on German Autobahn of course ;) )   then I think it has to be the V8!

Also you can bend 2 conrods & still take it round to 6 1/2 k & still win the novice class with that engine, also drove to an event, didthe event n drove him with it rattling, cant do that in a diesel
-
You can bend the conn rods in a Diesel though
-
yeh,but if you bend the rods in a diesel it wont go

sellin the diesel 110 soon hopefully
-
you cant beat the sound of a v8, but the deisel fuel economy is brill.and so much low down torque, id go for deisel.

LPG is 1/3rd the price of diesel now, that's a lot of fuel economy you need.
