Hi all thinking of buying a grand 3.1td are they prone to any major problems or am i best saving up and getting the crd instead budget is tight is all but would really like one. Any help and indfo much appreciated.
Gaz.... :)

IIRC the engines are a varient of the 2.5 VM....so runaway
Noisy diffs can be expensiveand check electric toys
Better go for a CRD or 4l I6 petrol which can do 19-26 mpg
Very practical and hugely underrated as an off road vehicle..

thanks for that i heard the engine was a version of the VM and that put me off will try and source a good crd for right money, missed one the other day in rotherham :( will keep looking.

i have never had a problem with a vm motor.. had a few cars with them in, my jeep being the latest, and all 100% reliable..

Bought a 3.1TD in 2006 and kept it for just 8 months, during which time it had
1500 quid in repairs done (under the extended warranty). Had trouble with everything
but the engine. However, I feel lucky. On our Jeep forum we get new member after new
member with VM trouble. It's always the same head problem. It costs an arm and a leg
to fix.
The CRD is much better, but there are a few reports of gearbox issues. This Merc
gearbox is treated as a sealed unit, and Jeep will quote you over 7000 quid for a new one.
Even assuming you never had any problems, the VM is positively agricultural compared to
the Merc engine.

He's right you know

well i know he,s right I work on mercs so know the engine well and it gives very few problems as does the gearbox but I knew nothing about the 3.1 VM unit other than all the stories you hear about head issues etc etc. Still thinking of buying a crd just that prices have gone up on anything 4x4 at the moment.
