ihave jacked up the car to check half shafts an uj and all apair to be ok
there is a little play in the rear diff but not to much ,there was some play on front output on the transferbox (borg warner)
have not checked today but after 360 mile trip today seems to be tranferbox looking to be the problem , any sugestion

could be the crank bush, either worn bad, broken up,is it like a droaning noise when letting the clutch up?
-
the sound is more of a juder like some type of spline or gear is slipping and it sound more . like a drive train problem

ahh,now you put it like that, could be the chain slippin in the transfer box, assuming its the borg warner box, need to make sure it ent the viscous hub seized tho, thats in the box too,but usually it would make that kind of noise unless on a lock and moving

drain the oil in the transfer box ,what little that was left was contaminated brass like coluring so looks terminal and lookin for onther transfer box

Brass bits mostly in the selector mechanism from what I remember, it could have been running out of adjustment but by now it could be well damaged.
