Title: A bit of advice if possible people - NEWBIE to S3's
Post by: stuntman on January 07, 2009, 11:44:41
Hello one and all.

My girlfriends Dad has managed to land on his feet and he's found a £50 series 3 with almost no rust and no dents, well cared for and low mileage, even has the original brown log book and the fuel vouchers :)

Oh and overdrive and free wheeling hubs, it's a diesel 2.25. 88"

First question is, can defender spec 750x16 rims and tyres go on, and will it be ok on these?

I've bought the following to freshen the old girl up, can you think of anything else that may be needed to give her a little bit of tlc.

-------ORDER DETAILS------
243959 Sump Plug Washer
536577 Sump Plug
550732R Clutch Master Cylinder

SD13 88in Diesel Full Exhaust System (3 bolts to manifold) - RHD
SWBKIT2 Brake Overhaul Kit - SWB from 1981

I know it's hard to say, but are there any usual suspects that would need attending to before it goes for the mot?

I'm a capable home mechanic, with 3 landrover builds under my belt last year, I'm just after some info really on what could go wrong in the re commissioning process.

Thanks in advance.

£50??? thats an unbelievable bargain, nice one!
chassis is the main thing, all the testers know it so thats what they look at most then brakes!
there not really that different to later landys, landrover didn't change things if they didn't need to!

Check the swivels on the front. If they are pitted they will leak causing lots of ware and poor steering.

Also note that you need GL4 spec EP90 for the gearbox/transfer box not GL5 spec which is currently the norm.
