my s111 box is dyin need to replace it i have a choice of a s111 or s11a which is best as i am running perkins3.3 only had it on the road for a week and already need to take the gear box out! such is life

if you put in 2a box.... you will need a new clutch plate as the release bearing is different .... and 2a clutch plates cost more. and release bearings for them are hard to get.
-
that said the box is hard core... 8)

Correct me if I'm does the 2a box have a non synchro 1st gear?
-
1st & 2nd gear's are crash 3rd & 4th are cincroed or how ever you speel that :)

That clarifies that, it either means I have a s3 box on an 88 with no synchro in first, or a 2a with a synchro fitted on 2nd.
Either way it works ok, just wondering
As far as a can say about yours, by the comments above it depends on how much hammer you give it.

the 11a is non synchromesh in first and second gear, but you only have to double the clutch.
it's a stronger box than the 111a.

My 2a box has always been a good one - 2nd is definitely not synchro but always changes so well that you never need to double clutch going up the box, and in most circumstances don't need to when changing down. That said, it's a lazy gearbox that needs nice slow changes if you want to be smooth (synchros baulk in 3rd & top if you hurry it). I've driven the thing for the last 20 years (and 120,000 miles) and nothing much has changed in it over that time - must just be a good one.
