We are in process of a new design of a discovery and rangerover extended flare.
I would be gratefull if you could comment please on your likes or dislikes.
Thanks to amalfi for the designs.

I chose plastic but, being more flexible makes them harder for normal car paint to stick too.
On the plus side for the fibreglass ones, they are easy to repair if they do get damaged!
From this:

....to this in a day & half (allowing for the resin to go off and paint to dry)

thanks for your help budgie.....
the sample i have in my hand is certainly as stiff as the fibreglass ones on my disco......
but its half as thin..........
if i stamp on it it pops back into shape....
mike
-
If the plastic ones were flexible, they'd be on my Disco tomorrow!
-
Re the comment about paint not sticking to plastic wheel arces: if they are made of poly propylene (as most car bumpers etc are) then the trick to make the paint stick is to BRIEFLY pass an open flame over the area to be painted, this opens up the surface to allow the paint to key. One pass only is required, subsequent passes kills the surface and paint won't stick. This process is used in industry to enable painting of poly prop parts.
PS Don't tell anyone, it's a trade secret !!
-
But be carefull, PP liberates a wax just below it's melting point (approx 160degC IIRC) which paint defiantely won't stick too. PP is one of the most chemically resistant polymers.
Purpose made primers are now available.
Still darn near impossible to glue, though.
cheers

I wasn't so much on about getting the paint on there as stopping it chipping off in large chunks when the arches flex.
-
the arches will be made of abs plastic...........
is that not better for the purpose of painting??
mike
-
assuming they WILL get bent and broken, I can fix glassfibre.
-
well I went throgh this whole thing before I torched the disco :(
I cut mine back and used knock on edging to get rid of the sharp edge. Worked well and was cheap. I had big tyres without them sticking out too much - just save some normal ones for the mot.

and here is a picture!
-
Re the ABS arches. Yes ABS is much more forgiving and can be painted without flaming first.
-
here are 2 pics of a small section of the first prototype...
where i am shown pushing the arch downwards the stress on the plastic is severe.
the other picture shows a stress mark to the bottom left where i stamped on it with my work boots...
the bit on the right is where i tried to rip it....(eventually succeeded with a vice)
the finished product will be smooth textured
-
have you made a mould for vacuum forming them then?
-
have you made a mould for vacuum forming them then?
yes
mike
-
are you making them to sell ???
-
Watching with interest.
(its still on my mind, trimming the arches back  )
:D
-
are you making them to sell ???
of course!!!
not privately but to some of the big 4x4 suppliers......
there are 4 patents and 1 pending for this product...........
and nearly 9 other products in the pipeline...
suggested retail price is to be set to be around 180 - 210 gbp...
left to the big retailers it would probably be more......
is that too much for unbreakable
-
Sounds like a fair price for 1 set for life.

keep us informed fella . . . . I'm looking for a set but probably with a bit more of a cut than whats shown in the pics.
Will they cater for five door motors ? . . . . . that's if one is brave enough to make the cuts in the rear doors . . . . .
-
personally from a repair or painting point of view fibreglass would be my choice

they wont need repairing :D

Knowing how much the plastic is and how easy Vacuum forming is, and the more you produce, the cheaper they become, i would say that 180 is a little pricey, be careful not to price urself out of the market, even with patents. if you sold the arches untrimmed to MUDCLUB members then i am sure you would be a very popular guy. I was thinking of doing some myself at work but the bed of our former isn't big enough! Good LucK!
-
how soon will it be before their ready for sale :?:

Can't really see the picture mate but my screen is turned down as I have a headache.
Anyway, ther are pros and cons to both materials. The right plastic will be cheap to make, easier for you to handle and will resist knocks and chips perhaps better than GRP, which is by comparison more expensive to make, heavier and more rigid but takes paint better in most cases and can be repaired easily with no loss of strength. It does suffer delamination damage though from seemingly small knocks.
I'd guess from your point of view a nice black ABS would be good, flexible, cheap, shiney but utterly impossible to repair satisfactorily, which means buying another :)
-
We are soon going to make some really indestructible flexible ones out of High Density Polyethylene. The properties for this are better than the abs option.Along with new designs.
-
HDPE, know it well. You won't get paint to stick to that too well
Got to say though it's a bit daft painting plastic anyway as paint is often less flexible than the plastic and comes off again, in patches.

wow mike!!!
they look kool mate i like the add on :D
dan

I'd certainly be interested in the new type. I don't have any intention of painting them, and just need some tough wheel arches to keep me legal when I put on bigger tyres as soon as funds allow.
Please keep us posted on your progress.
-
Ihad a set of three door wheel arches for two years but because i do not have enough trim i ve never fitted them.

Hi I am looking around for wheelarches for 5 door mk1 disco and like your design. Could you let me know when they would be for sale and the cost. cheers abbo
-
I'll have some of those if they're made in flexible plastic. Some of the tracks I drive have gates that you can only just squeeze through with the mirrors folded back. GRP ones wouldn't last five minutes.
As for painting them . . . . Tarts
-
I'm going to have a set of them in the new year :D
-
Any word on how soon these will be available?
-
