The original thread was locked because of personal abuse from a small number of members.  As far as I am aware, the posters posting so far on this thread were not part of the abuse.  Whilst we would remove any thread which continued on the theme of personal abuse, providing this thread remains on-topic and on-rules, there is no reason to remove it.

Quote from: "The Rules"
If this action is to call an end to the discussion and lock the thread, this will be done because the Administrators believe that the matter is unlikely to be resolved with further discussion. It is not a signal that the Administrators believe in one opinion or the other. "Follow up" threads which seek to deliberately reignite an argument will be locked, we ask that in these cases all involved parties recognise that their respective points have been raised and that the matter should be dropped, to "agree to disagree" as it were.

I do not believe this thread is seeking to deliberately re-ignite an argument;  it's because the poster is looking for answers to a question.  If this proves not to be the case, it'll be moderated.

If anybody has any questions about this please feel free to PM an admin or moderator, rather than discuss it in this thread, which is about exhausts.

Audio files can't be uploaded to Mud Club. My best suggestion is that you upload a video file to youtube or similar and then post the link.

On the matter of a louder exhaust, just a quick question. How loud is the arrangement you currently have? Actual measurement from a sound test rather than "It scared the locla Saxo drivers"

I ask because I noticed in another thread that you do RTV trials, and so will have to comply with the noise levels that apply to get through scrutineering. I also see from http://www.devilspit.co.uk/ that sound level checks are coming in at play sites.

Loud exhausts will also make it more likely that you will attract attention from the police, even if it is within the legal limit (whatever that is).

It also makes driving any distance unplasant.

if you are wanting to make your disco better offroad, as in your previous threads , surely that exhaust is going to catch all over the shop

absolutely

the first little ditch u hit will rip that off - you need to think about re engineering that

Loud isn't my personal taste but each to their own I guess.

One thing that always stikes me about the Saxo brigade though, all that noise has to come from somewhere, usualy the fuel tank.  A noisy exhaust probably doesn't do that much for power.economy and even the V8 can be over-piped.

back pressure from within the exhaust does tend to have benefits for torque. A v8 will have some to spare but not with big tyres.

Mine has a nice burble and i chose mine to be nice but not overly load. I had a conversation with one of my neighbours who kept coming hame at midnight in his very load scooby....he drives like a saint now on our road...it was either that or a big falling out

i wouldnt go too load as its just being an anti social prat.

for me I think loud is just 'tacky'  its the quality of the noise thats important.
Title: more sound please from my v8i
Post by: Evilgoat on October 20, 2007, 10:11:24
As said previously.

The Audi burbles hapilly at idle and its loud enought to notice that its not just another saloon but other than that unless you are behind me when I floor it or on the motorway it doesnt matter. The power curve starts at 3500 revs and thats where the pipe is tuned and goes from a gentle burble to a loud crackling roar as she picks up the pace. Thats all that anyone needs really, just advertises the fact that all is not as the person behind may suspect and to get the gas out as fast as possible while keeping the back pressure. Both the Zook and Serenity are scheduled for the same treatment (Zook its more to do with clearance)

My brother has a Fiesta where the previous owner asked for 'as loud is as legal' I hate driving the thing and after about 10 minutes I'm developing a cracking headache. You might want to bear this in mind as theres a lot more disco then there is fiesta to resonate.

Piglet is a good example. Not overly loud but again, a performance system so it let you know it means business at the right moment.

If you want a good noise out the back then a properly design exhaust system will be superior to one thats just had a larger bore straight through added on. Generally though the bigger the boar the loader the exhaust.

A good example are the exhaust on mid engined cars like GT40s, unfotunately there are no many Land Rovers that you could fit an exhaust like that into. They don't burble, just a smooooth bark turning into a roar.

notice how the manifolds don't just group the left and right bankc seperately, but group in firing order for best effect.

However and exhaust like that is tuned for mid/top end power rather than lower end power (higher torque) so ideal design changes depending on the terrain/speed your driving.

The Suberu Impreza WRX has a straight, flat 4 engine that makes a lovely grumble, not like the boy racer with a 1.0L Corsa with a big back!

thats why i never fiited a 5inch or 6 inch pipes was going to but there was room. and over hangs plus looked silly too

the rear box or mounted on a custom backet as strong a rock slider mount also  i made a varied hight bit adjustment bolt.

tow bar is on there to and exhuast sit no lower than the normal back box

[]this is how i made it

you need the cherry bomb from demontweeks.co.uk which is 70 quid for s/s steel

rear box is a 3 in twin from cobraexhuast

cut at the end and a 4 inch exhuast tip cause there is only enough room back the back body mount for that twin exhuast it the same on the other side.

exhuast tip are exhuast trim cut and welded in instead of 50 quid tips from jetex there only 12 quid from motorworld.

rear boxes are 60 quid each

pipe work is straight from cherry bomb bend at 45 degs at the middle of the a frame joint where the spilt is then pipe follows the contour of the chassais to the back box. . you need reducers on the cherry bomb and back box. there is not a enough room for the same diameter pipework . every join is weld up the mounts a standard place where middle box is normally but u need brackets made for the back box .they are mount to the rear body mount.

with the pipe work u could fit different back boxes . seen quad dtm, twin monza  but it hangs a bit low or have it out though the side.

not a 5 minute job by anymeans . i got the system in pieces at the moment a mate need the back box but have finished it yet but got all the parts to do so.

. i ll leave exhuast bits in the gallary of my disco.

u could fit butterfly valves for a custom effect to but u do get slight back pressure[/b]

My last Discovery was quite loud
It was a 3.5 V8 Efi with a Powerflow centre box and no rear box, exit from the side.
It sounded great, apart from when i used to leave for work at 6:30am
I always had to tip toe the first few streets at tick over because i was very aware of its noise
Would i have a loud car again?
Yes, but i wouldn't use it as a daily driver

I had pipecraft make one of there custom exhausts for me, it is side exit and only has a single centre box, its tucked way up inside the chassis so wont get pulled off or bashed when off road. its not loud but does let you know its a V8.
(they also de-cated it as well)
was a nice guy, and would recomend there work. There based in Basildon, Essex.

As pointed out, mines a performance one - not loud. The other advantage is that it is *very* tough. I have bent my previous 2 back bumpers on it...

Loud means nothing. The RR is only loud when you get up to about 3500 rpm and above - then you get the whine of the charger and the roar of the engine :)

Piglet isn't noisy until about 2500 (I think - been a while....)

Piglet will rev to 5000(ish) and the RR to almost 7000rpm - so the opportunity to make a lot of noise WHEN IT COUNTS (i.e overtaking people bimbling or in saxos ;-) ) is there. What's the point of a loud idle?!?!?!?

You ideally want something that remains unobtrusive at cruising rpm - and luckily I have. RR at 70mph is about 1300-1400rpm (6 speed box). Piglet is about 2700 (so just reaching into getting louder...)

A "freeflow" exhaust will AFAIK not be suitable for offroad  as it will effect your torque - and not in a good way.

dont diesel need high pressure to run right what ever pressure do u have.

over heating poor mpg and damage to the engine is very likely

hence petrol exhuast r one thread and diesel is a other thread. due to the different set ups of the two engines.

Have you been watching too much 'pimp my ride'?

Exhaust companies will spend much time and money on design research and testing their products so why not just buy one you like the sound of ??
You have already spent more time and money than it would cost for a Rimmer sport system.
My neighbor has an evo VII with a stupid sized exhaust that is loud.
It annoys the whole street when he goes work at 7 am and comes home at 11pm and the  performance increase, very little
Also he went 50 miles to look at a new van, complained of earache when he got home

Do you wanna explain your reply as i'm not sure what led to the bizarre reply from yourself :?
I don't want a PM as you've publicly replied on the thread so you can reply again.
I'm still with the starting question but as with nearly all your threads the goal posts gets moved from A to B to C and in most cases IMHO they involve not much really to talk about.
We've had cherrybomb exhausts & flame throwers galore. What are you trying to build your disco into, in fact, are you being serious when you start these threads.

Well done on finding the emoticons, if you click more (the blue writing under them) you can get some more up.

a good flowing exhaust works better on a turbo diesel than a V8 due to the following
DIesel- more gases you can get out more can come in so turbo spools up quicker & is more responsive
V8- needs back pressure to give it torque & power, my tweaked TDi is giving more power than my dads V8 & we both have same size of exhaust,

a free flowing exjhaust i have found on a diesel gives better MPG & runs cooler due to the gases escaping faster, less time there in the pipe less time for it to heat up,
MPG see first answer,

you are having a girrafe?

its a disco you drive not an evo or a skyline

having delt with moving baffles as made by trust/greddy for the skyline systems you will find that even with one its no a good idea to run with it anymore than 1/2 shut as you end up choking it,

yeah exhuast system is getting near skyline group set up but least u can vary the noise  it alot for these situations

late at night
trying to hear music or a conversation
listen to a shearman tank all the time

disco is still family car at the end of the day

take a look at an bmw m5 these day a  brut, family car and 205mph sports job noise blast, cruiser.

see tool for all jobs as the saying goes.

oh maxium noise for a car exhuast is 120decibells for a mot pass i think for a compaison a 2hp 50ltr air compresser runs at 97 decibells

That one don't sound that throaty all i did to mine was take the back box off and have a ss middle box that is slightly smaller than normal and use a side exit it has a nice low rumble but floor it though a tunnel and it's sounds like thunder.

I have read all this and its making my head hurt!

He wants it loud? Have a side exit straight off the manifolds in front of the front wheels!

He wants it to sound good? Take it to the likes of magnex, scorpion (not the 4x4 place) or miltek and beg and plead for them to develop a system that meets your needs but you will pay through your nose for it.

He wants it cheap? You seem like a pikey, go nick summat off something else!

Active butterflies, m5's and supercars???

All seems a bit 2F2F - he talks too fast (for his brain) and its making me too furious!!!!

Sorry about this chaps and as you can see i dont post much but i am sick of reading this rubbish that he keeps spouting!!!

Gav.

I'm sure the owner would be happy to know vehicle has been copied and his reg plate has not been covered so any tom dick or harry can gain access to it.

how many vehicles in your gallery now then that are not yours :?:

I'm also getting quite tired of seeing cherrybombs etc, this isn't max power or revs, we do 4x4s and sensible things.
IMO - this wasn't a dig

it would sound loud and be higher up to stop water getting in them
