Title: Advise!!! - fitting steering guard to disco.
Post by: turtle on October 03, 2003, 12:51:34
I helping a friend at the weekend fit a steering guard to his Discovery. Fitting the guard is not a problem.

His Discovery is fitted with the plastic skirt - fender (what ever you want to call it) fitted below the bumper.

My question is - does this plastic trim need to be removed before the steering guard can be fitted? Or will it fit with this in place.

Phil,

What is your friends Disco (Series I or II) and what is the make of guard ?

I had trouble getting mine done at home.  Ended up going to Loughrans in Towcester.  Can recommend them if you get into a tight spot.

Phil it will fit depending on which guard you have with the front valance still on, mine did.

However some guards it may be best just to quickly remove the valance just for ease and room, see how it goes.

Best of luck  :D

P.S Is the valance being kept, as many people I know have removed the valance once they have fitted a steering guard.

Looks pretty cool as well.

Phil,

You could always do what Colin did and take your friends Disco for a spin around Aston Cantlow and remove the front valance that way !!!!

(Sorry Colin)

Actually Phil, I bought a new heavy duty front bumper at the same time as the steering guard.
The steering guard (from Scorpion) was a very tight fit and the most difficult part of the job, but hubs and I managed to do it ourselves in an afternoon.

Phil,

I've got a Southdown steering guard on my ES, I didn't have any problem with the valance at all, the only problem we had was undoing the long bolt that goes through the steering box mountings, it was "FT", so beware if you have to get that out.

Also I had to re-arrange the tie down loops that are welded to the chassis just where you have to put the guard, (BIG hammer).

Good luck.
