Hi,
I've been offered a Grand Cherokee 4.0 and wonder if it's worth getting as a replacement for my XJ 4.0 that has a 4" lift and gets bashed through the lanes, is the ZJ much better?

Thanks in advance Maf

Maf..the pic on the right is a CLASSIC...
IMHO XJ's more parts for modding
ZGs more flex but cost more to mod
The XJ guys will be along to subvert you but...mallcrawlin.com or whatever its called may get you to have a rethink

Thanks, been doing lots of nice gnarly lanes, that one is through the middle of a golf course and the storm drain has collapsed and washed out the centre of the lane, proper fun as you have to drive on the top of the drain, the XJ has been doing real well, just fixed YJ, so now the sun is here... happy days.
I'm thinkin of stickin with XJ as it's often tight enough getting that through, firm beleiver in using the bodywork to get through, Grand is of course longer, wider and heavier and as you say more to mod, Cherokee has been very cheap to do.

for what you are after the XJ is better, the ZJ has a longer axil [ cant spell ] and are prone to break with extreme off roading.

Really?? I always thought that the XJ and the ZJ - ZG shared the same dana 30 and 35 axles. and the ZG/ ZJ has the same underpinnings as the TJ.

Think the D35 may not be quite strong enough for ZG

Where do they break? And more to the point, is this from the states where dropping a spinning wheel onto rock and then complaining that the axle is weak not crap driving style is the problem? 35mm of steel shaft is going to take some breaking either way I'd have though? (that is why it's a dana 35 isn't it?)
Is it just the halfshaft spinning off landrover style?
I'm from a isuzu background, and broken axles just don't happen, oh and the mog, that's got something like the equilivent of a dana90 or something stupid.

Bearings in the diff go rather than snapping anything
-
I thought that was a dana issue with the shells on the bearings not in inherent issue with the weight of a ZJ over and XJ (which really is only a fat macca in the seat)

Could be more fat macca's in the seats of ZJ's though
Diff is the same on both XJ & ZJ - the ZJ goes so much more - so make your own mind up :D

Well Im eating a saussage n egg butty and my diff ain't gone..
