Errm there is no such things as an 80's & 90's engine. :roll:
You have not included the 2.25NAD, 2.5NAD, 2.5TD, 200tdi, 300ti, Td5,tdv6 1.8petrol td4 etc.....
Also grouping the V8's is a bit like saying the 2.5NAD is as good as the Td5, [-X

for pure engineness its the Rover V8's but for all roundness its the 200tdi.

well the P38 has a BMW engine - the VM is Italian - the K series were Rover the V8 id Buick (originally)
Kinda narrows it down a bit :lol:

for me its has to be the v8. diesel have come along way since the early one , petrol head is just that and its unlikly to change.

going back 10- 15 years how many did u see with engine swaps in discos, and rangies and 90- 150 okay series had been done a few years before.

Has to be the 2 1/4 it's underpowered, drinks like the v8, leaks oil like it's going out of fashion, but it just goes on and on!!

That diesel V8 that never went into production would have been rather good - the Disco 1 would have been a bit of a rocketship with a tweaked, turboed one of those under the bonnet!

would say the v8 but is really a buick engine, so iff its a landy engine i'd say the 200 tdi . (could also say the 300 tdi but the 200 came first and the 300 was re designed off it ) ......

also 3.1 or 3.2 cant think which one it is in export 110s from the early 90s

what happened to all the mpi discos?
They were a bit like the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland. They were there all nice and strong, with their quirky ways, but eventually just faded away, leaving nothing but a faint smile. Sort of, if you see where I'm coming from. I know what I mean.

Still got to be the 2 1/4 petrol.
Mechanically straightforward, just goes on and on and on and on.
Can be fixed with a large hammer, a Mole wrench and a screwdriver by any semi-competent bush mechanic. Has commonality of ancilliaries with other Rover/BL models.
Not tempremental.
Will withstand a good soaking (with a good squirt of WD40).
Either that or a 2.8 Daihatsu Turbodiesel :lol: :lol: :lol:

Buick sold the rights to that engine to rover/land rover in the 1960's so legally the rover V8s are land rover engines.
My head says TDi but my heart shouts V8 :twisted:

had a td but my newish 2.5na blows it away ,been stood at least 9months just fired straight up ,runs sweet and does pretty well on the juice im happy with it :roll:

I liked my 300 Tdi (in a 'L' plated 110 Hard-Top) It was a wonderful engine, very eager & reliable, mid-30's MPG on long runs
The 3.5 V8 ('E' plated CSW, genuine factory V8. SU carbs &, allegedly, 134BHP) was a great machine for scaring the local boy-racers, if drinking like Oliver Reed whilst doing it.
I do like my current TD5, as it's smooth, eager, economical, revvy (if required). it's only really let down on day-to-day running by its bio-incompatibility, & the positioning of the ECU.
The one I miss not trying was the GMC diesel V8 in a 110

Where is the 4.2SC JAG V8, the 4.4 BMW V8, the 4.4 JAG V8, the 4.2 ROVER V8, the 3.9 ROVER V8, the 4.0 ROVER V8 and 4.6 ROVER V8.
Oh and the TDV8.
Pah! How incomplete is this list. You can't lump all the V8's together as they have been made by at least 3 different companies. BMW, JAG and ROVER (and of course Buick, but we'll stick to the stamped makers!)

no it wasn't! :evil: the td5 was designed by landrover specifically to go in the disco2 they originally wanted a TD6(range stormer engine) to go in there but there was not enough room, this is why there are individual injector pumps on top of the engine, so they could fit it all in. landrover designed it then when bmw took over they put it into production as they didn't have a 5cl diesel but they had a 4 and 6 the TD4 is bmw the TD6 is bmw the TD5 is landrover HA! :scold:

Seems there is much confusion about the Tempest engine. It is a Land Rover engine. BMW bought LR partway through the development.

They're about the same, on our recent trip down to morocco we got about the same MPG in the 101 ambi as the 109 6pot, he filled up twice as often though. :lol:

Care to quantify that? And possibly due to the fact that diesels sell more easily, therefore there is more of a market. I believe the term is "supply and demand".

Keep buying diesels :)
Petrol will get cheaper as there will be less demand for it, but they'll up the price of derv. I'll stick with petrol :evil:

I'm sure i read some where that the TD5 was the last true land rover engine that Lr made and it was being tested just as the 300tdi came out.

There was an article in one of the mags (can't remember which) a few months back (can't remember when exactly, useful aren't I?) about the development of the TD5, and it was apparently LR designed.

I really like the 200Tdi, its bomb proof and easy to work on in the main!!
BUT!!!! the new diesel V8!!!! in the rangy and rangy sport!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would have :police: chasing me for my license within hours! One of my mates has picked his sport up with this engine, I want to marry him, but his wife won't let me!!

For the heritage line, the original Rover 2 Litre Diesel from the early days of the Land Rover being produced could be said as the "best" engine. Why? It was what the entire line of Land Rover straight four cylinders were developed from right up to the 300TDi. Santana developed six cylinder engines from that line too (based on the 2.25 petrol and diesel) that have a reputation for being awesome engines.
If you want reliability, economy and decent performance for today's world then it has to be either the 200 or 300 TDi engines. That's my take on it. ;)
