Title: SJ Clonking
Post by: baz2236 on July 07, 2008, 20:04:18
Hi can anyone point me in the right direction to sort out my pain in the a**e SJ,

When I drive it down the road it vibrates like mad more then usual and when I come to slow down I hear a clonking noise coming from somewhere I think its the front when this clonking happens between gear changes or when slowing down you can feel it slowing the car down. I have changed the Front diff and Transfer box and also tried running it without the front prop connected but I still get the same clonking.

Can anyone give me any advice on what to try next.

Hi Yep I have changed the shocks a little while back and they are fine the clonking seems to be speed related

Hi No free wheeling hubs I am afraid going to take off the rear prop tomorrow see what happens, It has been suggested that it could be clutch, but I want to try most things before I start taking the g/box off.

Check your u bolts are tight and check the transfer box rubbers.

I reckon its a UJ on the rear prop. They can fail by "sticking" - when you shake the prop there is no apparent wear but when you take the prop off the UJ refuses to swivel in one direction.
