Title: Light Wiring Question
Post by: 3laner on November 22, 2007, 12:13:45
Im wiring in some amber LED lights on the front of the defender.
Where is the best place to run the wiring through to get to power and a switch?

Are they intended to be 'running lights'???

If so, the current draw ought to be compatible with wiring directly into the 'side-light' circuit.
Unless, you only want them to operate when the engines running??, in which case they'll need a voltage-sensing relay (something like a 'SmartCom')

they are flashing LED warning lights to go in the grill to be used with my roof beacon when escorting farm machinery etc. so just need to run them to a switch and power so i can switch them on in the cab when i need them on.

I'd probably run a wire from the beacon supply as that would mean you didn't need a switch.

If not, you could take a line from the coil + as this is only energised when the ignition is on.

As the switch will be in the cab, white/red tracer wire *should* be ignition. Run from there to switch to LED to body.

This information would be OK on my early 1986 90 - check your haynes or check with a Digital MultiMeter (bought a £6 Draper one in local motor factors)

Just what i thought. Seen as they are only LED's and with them being warning lights, i would have them permanant live so you can leave them on whilst the vehicle is parked, have a switch with a warning light on so you dont leave them on by accident.
