Title: 1" lift rear only - Update
Post by: bambamjj on August 18, 2008, 21:19:08
Taking the anti-roll bar off to fit guardian tank guard, whilst working at that end thought i might change shocks and springs, can i do 1" lift on rear end for now?

Yes.  If you use stiffer springs it will probably handle better.  If you use spacers, take it very easy 8-[

Will be springs, not spacers, when you say stiffer springs do you mean heavy duty?

Who is best place to buy from any comments appreciated.

Regards

In My limited experience (I've used both) the yellow springs from M&M are much the same as The Blue Bearmach springs

But if you only want an 1" lift

I would use a set of police spec springs from Craddocks or Paddocks

As they are half the price of the Blue or Yellow ones

Mine runs Britpart 1'' lift springs, very soft which gives me good flex, not the best on road but its not a sports car I don't care.

The red/white when new will give you about an extra inch, they aren't meant to be lifted though so as they run-in expect them to sag.  Stiffer springs, well yes H/D.  Most lifted springs are uprated anyway to account for the extra high C of G, plus on a RRC you loose the benifit of the self-leveling shock ontop of the diff.

You can run plus 2" shocks and still get the axle onto the bump stop, so they will be fine though you may get a small amount of dislocation.  Standard height cars should have no problem with this, your you'll have to see.

Well managed to get rear end stripped out, ARB off tank guard on, just waiting for ARB parts to turn up new Police rear springs and 2"+ pro-comp shocks, hoping springs and shocks will come off easily been soaking tonight in GT85 (think that is name).

Been told by Paddocks that i should replace all 4 shocks to the same type?  Not sure why.  When i do the front shocks gonna do springs then, any recommendations should i fit police springs to the front.

Once again your advise is appreciated

"police spec" front springs, depending on who you ask, are either standard V8 or Diesel springs, diesel springs being H/D spec for a V8.

But then the Red/White rear springs are also H/D spec for a pre-EFi RRC anyway, so all "police spec" means is H/D.

EFi rears were progressive, so I'm told.

So I have seen several times with my own eyes. Its the green/pink and pink/purple springs factory fitted to post 1985 RRC which are progressive. IIRC at some point in the 1990s the springs changed again, but I'm not sure what to.

What spec ar disco police springs? The red/whites are meant for a RRC which still has a self level fitted on the rear. I have before now loaded up a RRC on red/whites after the SLU was removed and lets just say it was interesting, driven steadily it made the delivery, but if you plan on carrying any weight I would definantly recomend a stiffer spring. Red/whites though are a nice spring when off road and without the pay load.

From experiance just chaning a pair of dampers on an axle at a time is ok.

Just fitting new standard springs will make it better.

You're right of course.  As a guide, lifted springs are often quoted as plus 25% on a Disco and plus 35% on a RRC, for the same spring (rears).  The difference is how much softer the RRC is due to having the SLU, also the Disco has a higher MAM than RRC despite being the same thing under the skin.

Well got welding done last night for lower towbar attachments, put Tank guard on changed rear  springs, shocks renewed all parts for anti-roll bar put bumper back on, went for a test drive to take rubbish down tip and WOW! massive change to vehicle, have not done front but it is pushing to do it now.

When i took off the rear shocks you could compress them with very little effort and they would not decompress just stayed at compressed.....

Springs seemed very soft compared to new but they were same height but vehicle now sits slightly higher now at rear which i am happy with.  all back together now and very pleased with results cant wait for run to work on Tuesday it is 37 miles of country lanes so lets see  :D

Thanks all for your help, just need to do front now gonna go for standard springs with pro-comp +2" shocks

Standard shocks are ot gas presurised so they don't extend, youd find the Britpart cellular dynamic don't either and they are quite a firm shocker.

But newer is always better.

Bambamjj, did you fit the boots to the shocks?  I did on mine and now wish I hadnt as they trap and hold water which has killed the already shoddy paint on them!  Mine are still on, but with no cable ties at the base just a 1" slit to allow the boot to slip down over the body of the shock.

Only bit that didnt impress me with the Pro-Comps though as the ride is spot on with a 1.5" lift using the blue springs (which also have very little paint on them now either - I must be unlucky with paint or summat)

Ride is good, nedd to change front now, parts ordered and as long as i can convince SWMBO will be fitted this weekend  :D
