Just been and picked up a 3 door disco tonight my little bro is going to get into landies at last any way motor is sound runs great and we are going to turn it into a off road beast but originally we thought it was a 200tdi but now we are not sure and think it could be a 300! How can you tell?? i know on the defender you can tell by the side the air intake is on but that is not the case on the disco! so how can we tell??
Regards James

The 300 has bigger frot headlamps and better interior. Usually a 300tdi has a plastic cover on the engine. I think 200tdi is up to L reg and 300 is late L onwards to T reg.

just about saved that thread!! any way forgot to say it is an L reg first registered in April 1994 it has a black rubber cover over the rocker cover and turbo the same as on my 300tdi defender so im not quite sure :?
-
Yellow dip stick top on a 300tdi
Green dip stick top on a 200tdi
-
Did post on 1st, check in the engine the 300 has a yellow dipstick the 200 is green. The air filters are different, barrel shaped on the 200 and square on the 300.
Hope that helps

excellent we got ourselves a 300tdi and we bought it thinking it was a 200 all for £1400 and it is in great condition. thnaks guys that makes me happy
-
Bit of a bargain then nice one
-
Ohh, so we got me a 300tdi eh? nice!
-
If that's it in your avatar, it's definately a 300
-
Next thing to do is use the search button at the top to find some threads telling you how to disconnect the EGR unit :D

Hey Tim is it better then if u disconnect the EGR valve and wot benefits would i get from doing that 8) :D also thats a good steal that disco at the price u guys paid well done and happy motoring :D
-
Hello :D
How can you tell its a 300tdi from my avatar?
And what would I gain by disconnecting the EGR valve?
I'm new to all this...
Thanks,
Brother Ted. :D

From the front end styling, they canged the grille and headlights
And what would I gain by disconnecting the EGR valve?
wot benefits would i get
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation system at low revs vents the exhaust gases back into the inled chamber to reduce emissions, so your engine is re-burning hot air....... NOT GOOD!
People claim better fuel economy, and more power....... it's an easy job, give it a go

how the EGR works is to feed exhaust gasses back in to actually cool the combustion chamber/temperature & give lower exhaust emissions due to the lower temp the gasses change form slightly differently, can go on but need to look at ma college work to be more specific
-

 Are you sure? I would have thought that the exhaust fumes were a lot higher temperature than the air in the inlet (post intercooler).
Quite happy to be proved wrong though
Whatever it does though, you will find better low end performance once disabled/removed :D

thats what i thought but have the course work saying otherwise somewhere

Hey all,
Apparently our 300tdi doesn't have an EGR Valve as its a 1994 model (quite early 300tdi) is this the case? or should we just look harder for it? :)
Thanks,
Brother Ted.

Mine has one (1995), have a look on this thread (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=13970&highlight=egr) as there is a picture of one
-
Hmm, well mine doesn't look like the one in that picture. There is a kind of diamond-shaped plate in place of the valve there. hmm. I'll take a photo when I get home if that helps.
Brother Ted.
-
possiable its alreeady been done?? :?
-
Sounds like it, if you remove the EGR completely it would leave a hole, over which you fit a blanking plate..... which is roughly diamond shaped :?
-
ah right, must have been done then
-
incase anyone is interested tho progress on project Disco can be viewed by going to brother teds profile and cliking on the hyperlink where there is a progress report to keep you all updated

So whats the plan for the disco?
Big lift/tyre's and so on?
:D

Hi Jake the plan is to lift it with this which he won tonight http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4604349102&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
I took front and rear bumpers off today ready for some winch bumpers, then big wheels and a snorkel and all the usual protection underneath, (spent ages looking at pics of how you did Challenger for some ideas  )
-
I could be wrong (please feel free to flame me if i am ) but that kit is off a rangie V8 and your disco is a tdi, i thought the spring rates were different for a classic and a disco? also the front springs need to be heavier for a tdi than a v8 as the v8 is a lighter engine? :?

I should say the chances are you are right as we dont know too much about this, it is the first lift we have done if it goes well my defender will be next on the list :D , it said suitable for discovery 2/300tdi, I guess if the springs need to be changed that wont be too much of an issue, if that is the case would it be just the springs or the rest of the kit aswell, we have a mojor shopping list for kit for this motor any way so if it is no good it could just go back on e-bay
Regards james
-
i think the dampers and the rest of the kit will be fine but i do remember enquiring about kits for my V8 disco and was told the front springs were different due to the engine weight, V8 or tdi, and the rears on a rangie were different due to the rangie having the Boge leveller thing on the rear and the rangie body being a different weight to the disco
-
Neal.
If you recal, my springs went onto my Tdi from my V8 with no problems.
They feel the same on and off the road.
:D
-
so they did mate i had forgotten about them :?
