does anyone know if it is possible to remove the ecu error from memory without taking it to the rip off merchants? I heard that taking one of the terminals off the battery for a few mins clears it.

Its a little more complicated than that, and really you should look at what the underlying problem is.
The light does not illuminate until the second occurance of the same problem - so if it is lit the same problem has occurred already.
The light clears on its own after 3 driving cycles without the problem re-occuring.
If you want to clear the indicator anyway then disconnect the battery for more than 30 seconds
But it will light again after two occurances again if you have not cured it.
