Title: Vcu repair kits??
Post by: maddogz on March 02, 2010, 10:15:17
Has anyone got any opinions on these repair kits?
I saw them on eBay for around £70. Just wondered if they were worth it.
I have a 2001 td4 with 135k on the clock. I'm thinking of lifting and laning it instead of getting rid of it for next to nothing.

Thanks in advance
Andy

Is it these dampers?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Freelander-4cyl-Viscous-coupling-damper-repair-kit_W0QQitemZ250412876164QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item3a4dc54184#ht_909wt_839

Often the failure of a VCU is seizure. A replacement damper won't help this.

Ours had the bearings fail, so we replaced these.

The loss of the damper certainly won't repair a seized VCU!!
And how important is the damper? My first Freelander didn't have one fitted, but this one does, but a friend with a Td4 the same age doesn't, and plenty of people in the Freelander club have removed theirs when they have been damaged.
Personally I wouldn't bother!!

Cheers for the replies guys.
I've not had a good look under my freebie but when you apply power to pull away from a junction that you are still rolling upto there is a thud from underneath.
Is it the vcu or not? All confuddled now  :?

Ok then a quick update and more questions.
I had a quick look at the rear mount and there is definatley some play in it.
So the question is, are all the mounts likely to be shot or just that one. Just thinking of my budget as front cv needs replacing and brakes need new shoes etc.

Thanks again
Andy

Most people just replace the front mount.

Thanks Graham, I'll pop into Craddocks on the way home and grab one.

All the help is much appreciated

Why don't LR make anything simple? I got under the car friday and undid the diff mount then realised it won't come out with out stripping God knows what else

Is there an easy way of doing it or is it a big strip down?

If you slacken off the 2 side mounts you should be able to remove the front one.
