Title: Anyone still use mud club ?
Post by: jimthelandyman1 on January 18, 2013, 21:49:11
I used to come on mud club very frequently a couple of years ago, as soon as I posted something people would be replying back faster than you could refresh the page, now it seems as if no one is on here. I have only had one reply to a post earlier on in the week and I am the last person to write a reply to anything in the defender section all week WHERE IS EVERYONE ?

We are not entirely sure where they are but they will return eventually.

The numbers in the world of 4x4 have diminished greatly in past 2 years or so and the general concensus is that peeps just don't have the money to have a toy on the drive let alone tax/ins for a second car ,also who can afford £25/30 for pay and play days I don't think things  will pick up again until the economy does the same, some people I spoke to that were laning over xmas period said they can only go laning once a month now and that's probably the picture around the country,

We used to go out at least once a month inviting people to join us, had some great days out. Now we probably go once a quarter on the spur of the moment.

Look on here most days

I am lucky enough to drive the lanes every day as part of my pest control duties but its hard to get a group together for a weekends laning in all parts of the country as we used to a couple of years back,i know the interest is there but the cash isn't also peeps seem to be working more now!

I'm on here every day, usually more than once

I used to organise laning most weekends a few of years ago and also had dealings with the birthday bash weekends but there doesn't seem to be much going on now in this area unless you want to go pay and play which has never really excited me to be honest.

I must admit that since I got the RR I haven't really had the urge to go laning although I've had a few offers.

I think there are still quite a few of us that look at Mud Club and feel sad that someone decided that they didn't want to be involved any more and closed it down, after a bit of banter it was rescued by Thrasher and here we are, it just needs to be used and get the word spread again and I'm sure it will regain its popularity.

Hi All
I am also one of the many that was on MC a lot, but due to one thing and another i started to visit less and less. that also goes for the laning whereas we used to get out one a month we only hit the dirt about 3 times a year now.

We had a good day out on Friday, tried to get from Cardiff to Brecon but the A470 was closed due to the snow.
We ended up going over the mountain road at Hirwan very cold and desolate.

It does seem that people aren't as able to get out as much, so they aren't visiting the forums as much.

I am just as bad as the rest - hardly done much offroading of any sort. Even lost interest in competitions.

Now I just want to travel, but don't have the time or money :(

A question to the masses...

Do the members have any ideas, suggestions on what we can do to encourage membership and or posting on the forum?

The sad truth is that folks have been hit hard by recession, rising fuel, tax and insurance costs... and the anti 4x4 community making life hard for all.

I for one was on here an awful lot back in the old mud club days, then it closed down for a bit and I found a local forum , Northants4x4 and the G4 owners club forum where I spend most of my time now as they are both relevant to me.

Sad but true, the community spirit seems to be lacking on MC at the moment, hopefull as previsouly mentioned once the economy picks up, so will the forum activity.

Perhaps it's a sign of the times Jim.  I remember your ID from before BTW.

I have to admit I'm on here far less often, I have kids and a demanding job now, I can't afford to run the V8 any more and don't remember the last time I got muddy.  I have to passenger if and when I get out.

There are far less 4x4 on the road, people work far harder for less money in real terms and stuff has got more expensive.  Lots of the "old guard" have drifted away or moved onto other things.

However, those of us still here are pleased to see you back

Im still around, I pop on here every now and again, currently im rebuilding a disco for expedition type stuff so Im not out laning or pay and playing.
my tastes in off roading have changed. before i had my old v8 and  did my best to brake it in competitions and laning. now I want to get out and explore.
once my new motor is up and running I will try and organise a few trips out.
I kind of miss the old mud club, but I do think this site will get busy again, it just needs time

In short? No I don't!

Absolutely nothing against mudclub, never had a problem or issue, however when the forum shut down for that period I moved onto other forums and that was that!

I still display the full bonnet size mudclub stickers on my bonnet, but that vehicle comes out about twice a year as its not road legal anymore, it did have an outing today as clerk of the course for my local trial.

I'm still very much involved with all things 4x4, but time and money is a definate issue these days.

But the good thing about old mates is they will all be pleased to see you again when you do finally return

Yes, it will take time, but I too think things will pick up slowly but steadily, very much a reflection of the country as a whole.  Fingers crossed for this year anyway.

And good luck to all those of us job-hunting.

Personally the long term downtime of this forum is what stopped me coming on here, it would appear that I am not alone in that.  Its a shame as this was probably the best of the ones that I frequented.  A few 4x4 related nightmares meant I had to find alternative, cheaper, hobbies.  Now that things have turned around though and I can look at getting another one, it would appear that it's not just this forum that is much slower, all of the main ones seem to have taken a bit of a dip recently.  Hopefully it is temporary issue and people will soon start using their 4x4s again, and as a result go looking for the community that seems to have died off a little.

prior to the forum going offline for 6-8months i came here almost daily, i was new to landrovers and wanted to learn (and learn i did) with threads and responses being started daily in most areas of the forums, to such an extent i'd spend an hour or more reading/responding each evening

once the forum went down i still needed my "fix" each night having more to learn so i went in search of places on the web, i found a few, i've met a few folks from those forums and refined my "educational" needs (i prefer Series motors), i consider those sites to now be my web "homes"

here. is just somewhere to casually/occaisionally visit for me now

i would like to thank all the contributors in my early days of landrover ownership as without them i would most likely have been branded as another irresponsible idiot trashing the countryside

The treasure hunt weekend the club held on Salisbury Plain a few years back was a great couple of days, the campsite was at the back of a pub with toilets, leccy hook-ups, water, etc and the first lane was 200yards away also with 300 hundred miles of lanes on offer its almost a perfect spot although its not central its easy to get too.

Not looked in for a while, it was down or in bits last time but I was googling for something (A Hustler kit car of all things) and found an old post of mine on here.

I like the new look of the place, everything a forum needs and nothing it doesnt.

I only went laning once, a great weekend in Wales near Llandovery but I was a regular at the Abingdon 4x4 festival, I bought three Daihatsus just to drive round the course and get properly stuck in the mud run :)

Three more kids has greatly reduced my hobby time but when they are bigger I'll be looking at getting a cheapy 4x4 again, probably a Fourtrak if there are any left.
Maybe Dalton Barracks will open up again........

Same for me as already said above. With the site being down for so long I drifted away and now only really frequent the D44 forum. I'm out competing once a month in the trayback but haven't been laning in 5 years now which is sad.
I guess I don't wan't to damage my Discovery when I've got a car which can take the punishment. It'd be nice to hook up again some time, maybe a weekend on Sailisbury would be good if it happens?

I dont mind organising a weekend camping/ laning weekend in Bala if enough people are up for it. We usually stop at a farm just outside Bala approx 1/4 mile off the road & right next to the river http://tyisafbala.co.uk/pricing/ The site allows camp fires and has basic toilets on the campsite and toilets and showers next to the farmhouse. I've got loads of routes in this area and i'm willing to lead a group. Please let me know if your interested and we'll put some dates together. In the old days we ran Mud Club trips here from our region and had over 30 vehicles in attendance.

If things where happing I would keep it, as would like to go green laning …..But I need as much notices as I can as my granddaughter goes to rest bite so I could try and make that weekend a rest bit weekend……….as she is disabled……….
I hope the mud club keeps going but from what I see and no one having any money  I’m not shore if it will……..But I would like to now if you are going laning……….

Don't worry, the Mud Club WILL keep going but it may be a while until its back to what it used to be, fewer active members = slower/less posts, but until the economy picks up we will have less members being able to afford to use there vehicles for much more than the daily commute. We've lost people who can't afford to run a second vehicle, and the ones who have their off reader as the main vehicle can't afford to break it - BUT the passion will always remain alive inside them and we will ride the storm and come through this

I haven't had much time either, I had 2 discos , now no 4x4 at all, tramping away Monday to Friday, with only sat and sun to get time with the kids and swmbo,,
We are even down to one car now, but urgently require a 7 seater, we looked at different models, shogun, terrano, previa, but always looked back at the fun we had in the disco.

Now Langley farm and mudbugz have gone, there doesn't seem that many local places to go, and breaking means money , and I was a frequent visitor to this site and met some great people, like anything else I suppose , circumstances changes, the economy changes and life changes.

Every time you see a cb mag mount on a car you just sit and say , "I remember them times" so quickly it came round to off roading and owning the green oval too.

I was thinking of running this trip on Sat 26th & Sun 27th October. I'll probably travel down and set up after work on Friday evening, some people might prefer to travel down and set up early on Saturday morning. Could you let me know either by a p.m. or reply to this post if you’re interested?

Totally agree with Tim on this ive been laning just about 44 years seen times like this come and go although not sure if it will ever hit the peak years again but Mud-Club will come through the present lull because we have a positive core membership so hang in there peeps and keep getting muddy Rog.

Well I've just popped back for the first time since the rebirth of the website. Much the same story for me as lots of other people. Money & time are the prohibiting factors & my two kids also + losing interest due to a busy life.

Last time I went out in the rangie was December 2008, it broke down on the way home from a laning trip & I decided to take it off the road for a few months to improve it. Did some work on it then the misses got pregnant with our daughter & then the rangie became a non priority & that was I over 4 years ago (omg......4 years, didn't even realise it has been that long till I just worked it out to write this!). Kate then got pregnant again with our little boy who was 1year old on Saturday.

The rangie has just sat there with me doing little bit here & there over the last 4 years, I've pretty much got it to be the truck I've always wanted minus the Ashcroft drivetrain & lockers which is due to funds. I've also had more interest in Audi since having my S6, started with an A4 TDI (got bored very quick) & then an allroad to fufill my desire to get muddy again but killed that in a ford & then bought the S6. I then convinced the misses into Land Rover ownership by getting her into a 04 TD4 3 door Freelander which she loves.

So I'm now back on here trying to motivate myself to get the rangie beast finished, I've been thinking over this last week about what to do. Keep the Audi S6 & the rangie for offroad or sell them both & by an Range Rover L322 to be the one family vehicle that does it all? But first of all I need to get the rangie back on the road. So if there is anybody local to me that can lend a pair of hands or just come round & kick my butt back into action give me a shout.

Regards

Paul

Hi Paul
I'm hoping that you get the RR up and working and come out laning with us. Wish you were a bit nearer and I'd give you a hand.

That's the plan Andy, last time it seen any mud was that day laning with you guys Dec 08.

I was out yesterday for a short time trying to do a bit, but just as I got started I had to pack up to see to my little boy. I then went out when Kate got home from work & did a bit more. Mainly just loads of small nigly jobs that I've been putting off & one I'm struggling with, the two bolts that go through the chassis to hold on the tow bar have seized in & become part of the chassis. I need to do this to fit the tank guard etc but I don't have any heat to get the [!Expletive Deleted!] out!
