Title: Starter Motor Worries
Post by: joe90 on May 16, 2005, 09:19:56
Have a 1979 SWB 2.25l petrol. Recently the starter motor has occasionally not been engaging, until this weekend, in the middle of an off road day it decided not to engage atall, all i got on turning the key was the sound of the motor turning, but nothing else happening!! After thrashing the case of the motor with special tool number one it still wont engage.

Is there anything out there that i can use to lubricate the pre-engaging part of the motor with, without causing it to stick further.

remove it and check to see if full of rubbish, most of early petrol ones don't have a Separate solenoid, and normally just get muck and dirt in there clogging them up especially if you have been wading with no plug in or insecure gearbox side cover bung.

Its probably stuck with mud as per the last chaps post.  If you cant be doing with taking it all apart then smack it with a hammer and see if it frees up - worked for me and never had a problem since!

Pick up a second hand working spare, with the muck inside them the only way is to clean them out, a spare means a quick swap round after playing, and still able to clean the other one later while running around
