Title: Volvo straight 6 conversion
Post by: Lucy1978 on September 18, 2009, 21:29:23
Does anyone know of anyone who's used the Volvo 3l straight 6 in a landy? I have access to one with an auto box for the cost of collecting it, thinking of trying to shove it in an 88". Any thoughts?

Don't see why it couldn't be done, you can shoehorn a V8 into one ok.

Anythign CAN be done, I'm wondering if anyone's tried it, it's always good to learn from other peoples mistakes

well going by the straight 6 land rover used to put in the 109, I think the bulkhead needs a little 'massaging' and maybe the rad needs to be moved forward - other than that its the same as any other engine swap - change mounts and wiring, and sort out gearbox connections etc.

It may go well but a waste of time,if you want power do a v8 or ford v6,the parts are cheaply available than going the volvo way where a converstion plate is going to be at least £400 and parts will not be cheap. Then you will have the electrics to master ,injection system etc.

I've already got 2 v8 trucks, and the ford v6 is a bit common. Part of the thought of it is to have something a bit different.
Besides, if I wanted to tune a v8 to a similar sort of power to the volvo 6, I'd still have to spend £££ I've just rebuilt a relatively stock 3.9 and that cost enough.

my dad fitted a 3litre straight 6 (overhead come sidevalve) into his old landy (swb that i "think" was a Series1) back when i was about 10 or 11,  going by memory i think he swapped the radiator for one from a Vanguard and lifted the bonnet a touch...

i've no idea if he had to do anything else as it was 40 or more years ago, all i do know is it sounded great on a straight thru exhaust
