Title: 2007 War and Peace Show
Post by: screwy on July 22, 2007, 13:24:17
Went to the excellent W&P yesterday as a day visitor (not exhibiting). Arrived late and waited for the torrential rain to end before venturing out of the landy, so limited time. Here's some of what I saw....

A restored P38 Mustang on fly past. Was really great sound buzzing the arena, shots dont do it justice...

One for Phil, a green goddess in superb condition not afraid of the quagmire either!

Smart 101..

This crane was wonderful. 'Griffin' was the name on it, never heard of them before. Looked good, sounded better but I bet it doesn't lift more than 25 tons!

Smart Series 3 GS. Mentalist driver too!

Bright pink pinkie, almost too pink?

The EMLRA Stand and jolly good it is too!

This superb Austin NAAFFI Van was actually serving teas!

Chieftan? Lovely whatever it was, weighed 58 tons I overheard and sounds wonderful!

Slightly smaller, but impressive nonetheless!

A Standard Vanguard in US military colours:

A fine collection of mainly leafers from Essex:

Pretty little Series 2:

And finally a short bit of ropey video featuring some of the above in the arena. See if you can see the mud.....

The mustang was excellent!  By the time we got in, struggle up the hill (wife and boy in tow) and found somehwere to stand, I literally saw the last shot of the gun fight!!

We watched some more in the arena and then trudged round and did we get muddy? YES!  Good fun though, although we had to go early as little boy was getting tired.

Only gripe really was the lack of show marshalls who seemed happy to stay in their huts whilst *some* exhibitors seemed fit to drive around the roadways far too fast given there where lots of children about.... I am suprised no-one got run over or hurt, as we saw at least two close misses and I deliberately stood I front of one Jeep driver who was feet away from clattering an older woman....

It's known as a "touch of the drabs", and it can get you into trouble, as you can see from my avatar pic on the left!

At the risk of sounding a real geek, the NA Mustang was designated P51. The P38 was the Lightning, as attached. Even so, to see and hear the Mustang is an awesome spectacle, and to think it was nearly scrapped by the Americans due to lack of performance, until somebody had the great idea of getting rid of the Alinson engine and sticking the Rolls Royce Merlin in instead. Apparently it holds the accolade of the ultimate piston engine fighter.
