Title: Autobox trouble?
Post by: SteveGoodz on March 02, 2013, 17:06:24
Howdy folks. It's official ... I dislike my D1

The latest is a knocking noise that appears to be coming from the autobox but as you can't always hear it the diagnosis might be wrong  :undecided:

It started about 2 weeks ago as a tinny rattle and has developed into more of a knock than a rattle. The biggest problem is that you can only really hear it when your moving.

Anybody got any ideas?

Has it got the rubber doghnut on the rear prop? It cud be that. Does it only do it when accelerating away from standstill or backing off?

Hi Dr Neil,

No, there's no donut on the prop. The noise is more prononced when accelerating and almost inaudible when I lift off. It's also there sometimes on tick over but if I put a wheel up on a ramp it stops  :undecided:

sorry mate struggling to think what it could be. Does it only do it when it is in Drive or does it do it in Park  and Reverse too?

Yesterday I drove down into deepest, darkest mid-Wales and it was hardly noticeable all day. This morning, dropping the wife off at work, it's quietly knocking again - took about 1/2 mile before it started.

Having got home again I sat with the car idling on the drive. It makes the noise in all gears, neutral and park although N & P are decidedly less frequent. Putting the transfer box into neutral doesn't affect it either. At tick-over the noise is a regular "clunk" but when driving it sounds more like a rattle and it's most pronounced at about 1250 rpm.

Don't know if any of that helps.

are you sure it isn't the handbrake shoes sticking on? Might b worth a look. Does the handbrake lever feel sloppy when pulling it up (no resistance)?

Defo not the handbrake. I'm pretty convinced it's either inside the autobox or transfer box. Gonna take it my local independent LR garage tomorrow and see what they say.

Well, whatever the problem is it isn't my problem anymore

Come Sunday lunchtime Paddy will cease to belong to me and will become the new project for his next owner.
