Title: My 110 Defender
Post by: Jake on September 20, 2009, 20:24:14
I've owned my M plate 94 Defender for less than a week now and already done a load of jobs.
I've fitted a Mud console, Mud seat rails, Mud transmission tray, a cubby box, an Exmoor Trim leather gearstick gaitor, my wheels & tyres from the Disco, a double battery tray and a swing away wheel carrier
As it started
(http://inlinethumb63.webshots.com/3198/2254682540102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Then the modifications began

This is the very beginning of a new project/toy, there is loads more to come

Very nice.
The modular wheels look great on a 110 so off off to order some and get rid of the alloys and wheel spacers.

I do prefer mushroom over the safari type and that mantec one looks sweet. One thing though, what's that one like as it goes thru the wing? Doesn't mate to the existing 300tdi defender crap does it or does it mate directly to a hose like a Safari ?
Title: Re: Jake's 110 Defender
Post by: Jake on October 06, 2009, 20:47:00
It uses the existing air intake and mate's up with it using some gaskets
Very simple to fit, took about an hour.
Plenty of silcone later and its water tight
 :D

 in that case I'll keep the safari - already had a mushroom one that was like that (not mantec) and in my experience it was a troublesome arrangement  :( RTV silicone doesn't stick to the plastic wing fitting for long. The original plastic wing box thing collapses and stays collapsed when vacuum testing the system for leaks. The original pipe that fits to that wing thing is only a push fit and the silicone didn't last long there either. I never had piece of mind with it, so was won over by the nice lengthened hose attached directly to the snorkel base with proper jubilee clips as per the safari kit.

In a bid to make the inside more cool looking i have purchased a Td5 binacle
(http://inlinethumb45.webshots.com/2860/2080847320102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
The main reason for change was to modernise the look.  I don't like the dark early dash and the Td5 has lights in the heater ends as well as LED warning lights
After doing much research i purchased all the necessary parts (see link at bottom) and started
Here's the old dash out
(http://inlinethumb59.webshots.com/19002/2016806070102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

Whilst bench testing the warning panel i (stupidly) got one of the wires wrong and blew a transister on the PCB and now only 1/2 works.
Fortunetly i can use the old one in the new dash until i find another late version

Old dash
(http://inlinethumb46.webshots.com/45549/2134797010102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
New dash
(http://inlinethumb06.webshots.com/22085/2037867810102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
You can see the original warning panel in the Td5 binnacle is recessed
(http://inlinethumb43.webshots.com/46314/2781261550102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Night time!!
This page was very helpful
http://www.retroanaconda.com/landrover/2009/10/installing-defender-td5-gauges-into-a-200tdi300tdi/

I've been preparing for the new seats by adjusting the middle seat frames
Here's the standard postition for the middle seats
(http://inlinethumb23.webshots.com/44758/2129466600102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I used a Exmoor Trim kit to move the seat backs back and up slightly.  This allows you to sit further back which gives you more leg room
(http://inlinethumb19.webshots.com/31314/2193000720102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Fitting the kit
(http://inlinethumb15.webshots.com/26318/2074902190102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
The kit is good but the intructions are a bit vague but you can't knock the results.  Even with the Mud Rails fitted I now don't have my Son's knees in my back and he can sit more comfotably
http://www.devon4x4.com/products_a/p9095c263/0/land-rover-2nd-row-extension-kit.html
You can't fit these kit with 3 man bench seats so removed mine from the boot in preperation for the store drawer and shelving i'm planning on fitting in there
(http://inlinethumb07.webshots.com/34182/2819256360102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
The dog guard had to moved backwards by 5" too.
I have left enough room for the new rear seats that i'll be buying in the new year
I'm going to fit 3 of them in there (like this but with a matching middle seat)
I have also fitted the correct Td5 warning light panel in my dash
I'm stock piling parts at the moment too for the big change around.  I'm putting a new roof on that has no sunroof or alpine windows.  There will be a LaSalle full headlining, Series 3 88" van sides with no windows to replace the side panels, new galvanised cappinga and a new door.  All but the headlining are here and ready for painting.
You can see why i need to change the cappings
(http://inlinethumb18.webshots.com/43089/2024862500102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

I will be putting in some overland products as soon as i have some spare cash.
Here's some ideas
(http://www.mobilestoragesystems.fsnet.co.uk/images/drawer.jpg)

I haven't figured out how i want to mount the fridge in the boot yet.  That will determin what else goes in there and how

do you have to swap out the sender in the transfer box for the electromechanical type or is the td5 purely mechanical cable like the tdi?

You'll need one of these
http://www.devon4x4.com/products_b/p13350c-2/0/transducer.html
a 16 and 20 way plug for the warning panel

http://www.devon4x4.com/products_b/p13468c-2/0/multilock-040-16-way-plug.html
and, of course, one of these

Well, i've finally got bored of a wet seat and dripped on arm followed by a cup holder full of water.
Today, i changed the roof for one that doesn't leak
Dodging the weather i removed the headlining, trim and sun visors.
I have now found out exactly where the water was coming into the boot from
(http://inlinethumb47.webshots.com/43822/2639996570102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

I'll be doing the cappings when i change the side panels (just after Christmas i hope)
Off with the roof
(http://inlinethumb25.webshots.com/43224/2361034110102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
And on with one without a sunroof and alpine windows
(http://inlinethumb25.webshots.com/43160/2331180910102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

As you can see the weather was perfect for roof swapping
I just have the headlining to re-fit in the morning and then it will start to dry out at last!!

This weekend i have fitted unbreakable heated mirrors to my Defender.
Not totally LR looking but nice and strong with the abilty to de-mist in the morning

http://www.devon4x4.com/products_a/p13369c19/0/defender-unbreakable-heated-mirror.html
To wire them up i needed to fit some of my Carling switches i had in the Discovery.
This mean't cutting some more holes in the Mud console.
Due to the amount of space the switches need i had to relocate the radio down to the bottom.
So, two new holes later it looks like this
(http://inlinethumb12.webshots.com/44235/2347931610102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

I wired up the mirrors to a on-off switch using a relay.
Now, just to obtain a heated screen

Today i started on the van conversion.
This will make the back end much more secure when the camping and stowage equipment goes in.
Also while the sides are off i'm changing the cappings for genuine galvanised ones

Tuesday
After dodging the morning rain i set about the other side today
First job is to undo every nut and bolt that holds the side panels in place
(http://inlinethumb47.webshots.com/44526/2068491930102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Then remove it
(http://inlinethumb15.webshots.com/39118/2080057820102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Remove the rusty capping
(http://inlinethumb44.webshots.com/13163/2438438630102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Then i fitted the new capping and the other non window side panel (which come from a 88" Series 3)
As you can see i had to throw in the towel today as the light disapeared
(http://inlinethumb16.webshots.com/44559/2335444680102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

Wednesday
The weather held off today so back out to do some more.
Today is swap the tailgate day
You can see why it needed to go

Off with the old and on with the new (er)
I took this opotunity to re-set the spare wheel carrier so its closer to the door.
Much better fit  :D
(http://inlinethumb43.webshots.com/44778/2626039720102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I didn't spot it before but there is no hole on the out side for the rear wiper or the hole for the wire from the heated screen to run down through.
I'll go and buy a hole cutter tomorrow and deal with those  ;)

The previous owner only had it for one thing, shooting.
It was used and abused and never loved so some parts went to pot very quickly.
By the time i'm done it be very smart  ;)
The panels, tailgate and cappings will be colour coded and the whole car will be cleaned and polished to bring back its slightly dull look at the moment.
This is a long term project which i have a lot of ideas for and a few trips planned with
I reckon it'll be finished in 3 years time

Doing some really good mod's there mate, got me thinking about doing some of them to mine, heated mirrors are waiting to go on mine when i've painted the new hinges, though i must say by far the best mod i've done so far is the heated screen :)

Sorry, been doing a few more jobs  :D
I 've fitted the CB into my Mud dash
I used a din mount which gives a good simple look to the dash
(http://inlinethumb19.webshots.com/44818/2734184820102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

I've used a side mount on the back of the roof with a Orbitor antenna.
Then it was time for a big install
First job was to fit a rear work light
(http://inlinethumb22.webshots.com/43669/2527440460102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Followed by my new fibreglass headlining

And my new roof console
(http://inlinethumb38.webshots.com/44197/2243906230102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I had to cut the headlining to fit the console.  The two are not instantly compatable as the console is designed around the Land Rover headlining
(http://inlinethumb16.webshots.com/5519/2483324780102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

The cb has been relocated up into the console so i put the blanking tray back into the mud dash
(http://inlinethumb51.webshots.com/46066/2634990360102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Headlining is looking rather smart
(http://inlinethumb23.webshots.com/43926/2615630500102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
The finish looks like this
(http://inlinethumb27.webshots.com/46426/2575828660102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I installed a passenger grab handle too.
You have to trim the sun visors down when fitting the roof console
(http://inlinethumb55.webshots.com/43574/2545257390102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

I fitted a 100 amp alternator
(http://inlinethumb12.webshots.com/46667/2831050700102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Then i began the ply lining of the load area.

The Series sides have ribs that run along the length which i used to fix some baton too
(http://inlinethumb47.webshots.com/46190/2696169930102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

Now that the basic walls are in place i can start planning the lay out of the rear.  There will be accessory sockets in there for the fridge and so on.
I'll do the flooring soon then find some material to cover it all.
Then i'll insulate the walls, seal the panels in and get some edging on the ply.
i have  fitted my new rear diff guard
Its a ARB Dana 60 cover which fits like a glove
Just got to get a D44 one for the front axle now
i fitted some much nicer, original looking heated mirrors
I brought a couple of new mirror heads and drilled through the bottom
(http://inlinethumb17.webshots.com/17104/2372580170102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Took the mirrors apart and stuck heater pads on the back
(http://inlinethumb04.webshots.com/46211/2856145010102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Added a decent length of wire then rebuilt them
(http://inlinethumb09.webshots.com/46024/2868193920102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

Then drill down through the ball section of the mirror arm
And the underside if the arm into the hinge
(http://inlinethumb55.webshots.com/46710/2502021640102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

Remove the door hinge bolts and open hinge
(http://inlinethumb31.webshots.com/15326/2195758770102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Route the wire through a p clip
(http://inlinethumb28.webshots.com/44059/2691660360102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
In through the bulk head
(http://inlinethumb11.webshots.com/47306/2742945800102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Once both sets of wire were in the car i removed the top of the dash to feed the wires to the Mud dash
(http://inlinethumb37.webshots.com/45860/2448190270102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

The switch, relay and fuse were already in place from my previous install
(http://inlinethumb57.webshots.com/45688/2233707980102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
To celebrate i gave it a birthday wash and polish
(http://inlinethumb20.webshots.com/37139/2734668080102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Now for the winch
First job was to replace the sagging springs with some HD Land Rover springs, new dampers and some D44 HD turret rings
(http://inlinethumb54.webshots.com/47157/2040003750102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Then i fitted a Milemarker SEC-8 winch
(http://inlinethumb16.webshots.com/45711/2598522410102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I stripped of the wire rope ready from my Plasma rope
(http://inlinethumb05.webshots.com/45444/2629926100102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
For security i have installed a HD battery isolator switch
(http://inlinethumb01.webshots.com/45376/2662590590102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

I want to install winch switches on the dash and use my Warn wireless remote to operate the winch so i replaced the solenoid pack and fitted a Allbright contactor
(http://inlinethumb61.webshots.com/43068/2773607770102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

You can now see its sits nice and level
(http://inlinethumb11.webshots.com/45514/2822760400102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

Are those springs lifted? If not they may just be the ticket for mine as it is also drooping at the front even without a winch! I'm fitting some 33" tyres so don't really want to lift it as I don't think it's necessary.
