Funny you ask as I have just been out pulling this apart. It looks like it is original this roof part but I could be wrong. The way the felt is pasted on is questionable. Put all the lining looks like it is a factory made part. To me it looks like the whole of the roof lining is original.... So what does that mean....

It has the wrong bulkhead for 1968, and the wrong front end.  The Series 3 didn't begin production until 1972, so it should be a Series 2A with the lights in the wings (but no hole in the wing for heater intake) and metal mesh grill.

The bulkhead also should be a 2A bulkhead, rather than a Series 3 plastic type bulkhead.

If it is a genuine 1968 vehicle, then it is going to be a fairly early Series 2A 2.6, as they began production around 1967/1968.  Unfortunately I also have a gut feeling that this is actually a later vehicle that had the V5 and chassis number put onto it from an earlier vehicle.

Miniman, do you know if it has syncro on 1st and 2nd?  It's going to be fairly awkward to distinguish whether or not it is a Series 2A with a Series 3 front end on, or a Series 3 trying to be a Series 2A.

Its on the document as a 1968  6 cylinder  109. The engine has been chaged for a recon 2.25D and the box is a later type box not a 2a box.

Ooops.  Didn't notice that.  Nothing on it stands out to me as 2/2A era.  I think it may be safe to say that it is a Series 3 trying to pose as a 2A.

Tha back of the chassis looks military ( parellel ends to the cross member ) but I see it has no removeable cross member for the gearbox . That makes it possible an exmil. SII chassis in my book .

I didn't notice the deep sills.  The rear number plate light is nothing special, because the Series 2/2A also used a seperate light for the number plate or the light mounted in the rear sidelights (like mine has).

It also isn't possible to change the dash on a Series 2/2A bulkhead to a Series 3 one without a massive amount of work.  The two bulkheads are completely differant.  Furthermore if it was a 2/2A bulkhead, the windscreen mounts would be differant to what they are on the vehicle.

I suppose you may very well just be seeing a vehicle that has been put together using the best parts of two or more vehicles.  Because chassis wise, there isn't much differance between a late 2A and a Series 3 chassis, so most Series 3 things can bolt quite happily to a 2A chassis.

Bulkhead
Dash
Doors
Wings
Are all S3

Also it looks to me like the Chassis has the centre seam, wasn't that one of the changes that came in with the S3? ie the main rails are 2 C sections welded together rather than 4 pieces to make a box (both my S2 & S2a, chassis are flat top and bottom).

About the only thing that suggests S2a to me is the Rover rear axle, but I don't really do modern LRs so couldn't say if that is wrong for a S3 109".

The handbrake lever looks to be a s3 one. s2's had a short stubby lever, i don't know about 2a's though.  The centre seam that mathew mentions only appears  in the last couple of years of production of 109's (early eighties).

Something else i've just noticed, it has extended(military) spring hangars on the back and standard ones on the front.

well, from a very quick glance over a cup of tea and a biscuit ...

it would appear to be series 3, or at least, the bulkhead and interior are, as are the wings, doors and door hinges however this in itself means just about nothing.  The 2.6 was fitted to the later 109" series 2's so that might tie in quite nicely.  However, the sills under the doors look a little thick to be series3, and sort of scream series2...

The chassis number and the series2 club would most likely be able to tell you for sure.   Heck, it is 38 years old, who knows what's been done to it.

Other than that.

The chassis appears to have been painted with what I would guess to be red lead and a 2" brush

You really shouldn't keep the spare wheel(s) in the boot

Tetrosyl is not something you're supposed to stick the headliner on with

the back of the roof where they put those lights will leak like a seive

or is that not the sort of constructive answer you were looking for ;)

OK, so the transfer lever plate is there...wheres the VIN plate?????
shouldnt it be mounted just above the hand throttle??????
definately a s3-if it is a s2, then someone has done a lot of work to it, bulkhead, handbreak (gearbox??) dash ,wings, heater ,wipers...also i thought the 6 sat further back than the 2.25??

The handbrake lever is correct, Series 2As and Series 3s had the same handbrake lever.  The rear rover axle isn't anything special either because I don't think it was until around the late 70s that it was introduced?
Title: is it or isnt it a s111
Post by: fire boy si on April 20, 2006, 20:52:43
i think that it is a t s2 or s2a that has been rebodied with later parts my swb s2a 2.25d has all the common identity marks your 109 has and mine was registered jan 1971 but has nothing in common with my friends 1970 s2a swb 2.25d or his 1967 s2a lwb 2.25 and all our vehicals have what would be known as a s3 front

as too the axel i think steel is right the 67 has a different axel case to yours it may have been upgraded at a later date (oh for the love of big boys mechano)

laters fireboy si
