Title: 3.5 V8 lost all power...
Post by: v8rangie on March 15, 2008, 17:11:34
Right finally got my Bobtail on the road and was geting around 5 MPG

So i cleaned the engine through with 10k boost (de-coker) and was running fine for about 10 mins till it started spluttering and lost all power.

so i cleaned all the elec connections inc dizzy etc...

and stil the same. it will start and tick over fine but as soon s you put your foot down it takes a few seconds to get to about 1600 rpm and that is it. and i cant drive it at all there just isn't enough power to move the truck.

So i replaced to fuel pump which aint cheap and still nothing.

put some redex in the fuel and still exactly the same.

but went out today and now it wont tick over. it will fire but will cut out almost straight away.

any more ideas???

i have fitted new plugs, leads, dizzy and arm a few months ago.

Also tried a working ecu the other day but still the same....

Timing or ignition fault.  Timing would explain the low MPG and the poor starting.

but it was strange that it suddenly lost power.

the only ignition part left to replace is the coil but could that cause the trouble?

yes it could be the coil but it could also be the vaccum pipe on the dizzy advance/retard bit fallen off or split

Checked the vacuum pipe on the dizzy today and all fine no blocks or splits.

But now it wont start at all not even try to fire... :(

Is it on carbs or injection retrace your steps what you done since it last ran fine do a compression check, check dizzy is clamped tight check points for spark.Dont take for granted that new parts put on work fine i found this out with a new condenser that was duff.

POINTS !!!!!!!!!!

it has an ECU it wont have Points and it will be EFi

mine is Carb and that does not have Points

yeah its efi.

well the only thingi done is cleaned the engine through with de-coker.

and since has lost all power but now decided not to start.

im gonna get a coil and a air flow meter as it was running gas and apparently they break down after a while..

Actually a coild would do that yes, mine did something similar, it would start but we all know the V8 will run on 5 if it has to, but I had no power and after a couple of minutes it was undriveable.

I carry a cheap spare now.

Have you tried the temp sensor for the ecu? just on top of the inlet manifold. mine did that and it turned out to be the temp sensor.
Title: Re: 3.5 V8 lost all power...
Post by: v8rangie on March 17, 2008, 18:51:11
well my temp guage doesn't work anyway so i need to get tht sorted to know whats happening with the engine while driving.

Temp guage sender and ECU temp sensors are both near the thermostat and can be checked with a multimeter.

thought they were down there.

the top of the inlet is something to do with the fuel aint it?

On the EFi, yes all the wired up bits are for the EFi, if yours is a 3.5 then IIRC you have a cold start injector.

puta new coil on it today and will fire but will not run..

any more ideas?

Gonna change the air flow meter next and see if that does anything.

Is it 3.5? or 3.9 hot-wire?

If it's the 3.5 then you need to thorouoghly check all the sensors on the EFi now, do you have the Haynes manual?

mine did exactly this. tried everything you have. eventually got it driveable. BUT..............you need to check your valley gasket. if the rubber or the gasket are knackered, like mine, you can get it running etc. then when you are on the motorway, it all goes bang! well lots of smoke and some little bangs. when i stripped the engine (3.5 efi) the intake system was full of oil, and i tracked it all down to the rubbers on the valley gasket being perished. even though the engine had apparently been rebuilt!

Well if they fix it the fuel economy will save enough money to pay the garage bill ;)

Yeah thats true.

im gonna tell him if its gonna cost me hundreds then dont bother. ill just convert it to diesel or just drop a 3.9 in :)

When mine fired but wouldn't start the RAC bloke removed the fuel pump relay and replaced it with a fuse, started straight away.Pete

i runa bottle of injector cleaner through the system on 2 occasions, and on 2 occasoins had to replace a injector due to being blocked, ( i reckon loose/cleanes lump of curd caused it) any how after replacement all run fine, Worth a thought????

Good point, I'm undecided on oil flush for that reason :-k

well its all fixed and running sweet now.

it turned out to be a mixture of a few things.

the air pipe from afm to inlet had imploded basically cutting the air supply causing it to over fuel.

which killed the plugs.

And the remainder of the lpg which was still connected was playing up so all that came out and a new set of [plugs went in and he fired straight up and is running very very well now.
