Title: 1999 V8 Auto not starting intermittently...
Post by: BRO on March 11, 2008, 10:02:01
:(

My Disco has been having starting problems...

About a week ago after going through a car wash then went shopping & 1hour later came back to the car & the engine turned over fine but would not fire. I tried intermittently & then phoned RAC & popped back in the shops to see if I could get a new key fob battery. having put in the key fob battery it started 2nd time so I cancelled the RAC thinking the problem was sorted.

After that it commonly took a couple of attempts to start the engine - but it always turned over.

Today at the shops again I had the same problem & called the RAC again & again after ~ 1/2 hr of intermittently trying it fired up - so cancelled RAC again.

Once home I checked the spark plugs... Pretty sooty, but not evenly sooted  :? I brushed them all off with a wire brush, reinstalled my 1/2 used LR OEM air filter (having removed my uncleaned K&N  ) She fired up (2nd time) and I took her for a fast roads spin & everything seemed OK.

I used the car a couple of times & the engine started OK, but my last trip the engine stalled at a road junction  I wasn't able to start it & ended up having to put it in neutral & push it across the road to sit it out of the traffic flow and next to the kerb (quiet streets fortunately  )

A chap who has had mechnic experience offered to have a look thinking it might be a leak in the air inlet system after the MAF but could find nothing.

There is a strange whirring/ buzzing noise that can be heard from the cabin when the ignition is turned on which I have not noticed before. It seemed to be associated with the silver unit with the green sticker on shown in this picture...

Any ideas much appreciated  :D

Or any good Land Rover mechanics near Blackpool???? The main dealers are a bit far from me! - Mine is normally serviced 45 miles away  :(

I am now booked in at "Land Rover Specialist of Preston Ltd" tomorrow morning for them to run diagnostics  :'( - anyone know anything about them?

Cheers

Mick

That looks like an idle bypass valve to me.  The hotwire one does make a noise if you leave the ignition on, but perhaps yours has expired?
