Title: My bank balance ?????
Post by: thehighwayman87 on September 02, 2010, 19:08:40
Hi every one, pleased to be a new comer in the 4x4 world, i am completely new to off roading apart from off road motorcycling eg: enduro,,, i have a reasonable head on the basic mechanics of any vehicle eg general servicing, Discs pads wishbones c.v's alternaters exhausts etc,,,,, To change subject very abruptly, just the other day i saw a very clean example of a 1992 defender 90 200tdi i enquired within the motor sales shop about the landy,,, after chatting to the sales man he practically told me i shouldnt buy it and frog marched me towards the door i couldn't help but think to my self, did i disturb him on his lunch break or what????? Before this incident, i had it in my head i needed a 4x4 landrover defender 90,,, but after a quite rude, short conversation, im now not so sure i want to off road, he told me the tax was rediculusly expensive fuel consumption was bad, in 2012 there will be practically no where to off road a vehicle, and then....... told me the car was out of my price range.. How does he no what my price range is????????? im a bit confused i really want to give it a go but he has put some form of doubt into my head.... Thanks every one for reading..........  :|

Don't let that put you off, He's probley had a bad dayor as jay says he wanted it for him self
Tax depends what you go for  and age of motor as you probly know.

as for no where to off road there will always be places, There are so many clubs about and groups like Glass and the like that do good work to keep us laning.
and you have the Pay & Play sites.

wasn't W.J.Joyce Land Rovers Ltd in trowbridge was it? as that exactly the sort of thing the complete rrrick of a owner/partner down there would do.... complete and utter rrrrrrrick and they lost a fair amount of walk in business because of him and is stinking attitude. Once did same to a young lad and totally embarrassed him didn't realise who he was, so this lads ol'man turned up who was a big contract customer with them and cancelled all future dealings. He wouldn't sell my mrs a defender - saying it not what you want you want a freelander , would even tell her price! I had a run in over pricing up some parts and never been there since as guy was abusive and rude. Seems he only interested in selling brand new ones to farmers who have been going there for years. Further more - even if you took a brand new vehicle there for an MOT they would find something to fail it on, worst place barr none to take a vehicle for an MOT to in Wiltshire. Sorry for rant but your story reminded of that guy and opened old wound.

Don't listen to him mate, go get yourself a similar truck from someone who wants your trade.

How does he know your budget. My mate won just under a million on the lottery 15 years ago, he went into the local Bmw dealer(Browns Hereford) and was looking at a new M3 and asked for a test drive. The salesman laughed at him and told my mate to stop wasting his time,so my mate walked out and bought a new Impreza, should of seen the salesmans face a couple of days later when his boss got the full story. This is what i would of said  "Your P45's in the post tosser"

Tax on a 1992 vehicle will be a lot less than on a new one, all pre-2001 LRs are taxed at the same rate.

There will always be somewhere to take it off tarmac. There have even been some cases of winning routes back from the antis after a lot of detailed research and assembling of evidence, although that battle is likely to carry on for a while as they'll use every appeal they can lay hands on to keep other users out of the countryside. Plenty of pay and play sites about if you want to play in mud holes too.

Just don't bother with them again, there are plenty of good independent specialists out there. 90s usually seem to attract daft prices, especially in rural areas as the farmers don't let them go until they disintegrate.
