Title: 200 or 300 tdi
Post by: 90sam on October 29, 2008, 00:09:24
Hey all,
Thinking of getting a disco to get back into the land rover scene!
I know the engines are the same but which is the best to go for? I will be using it daily and for greenlaning/ light off roading
Kind Regards
Sam

I have a 200 but the 300 is a bit more civilised for day to day use, has a few more refinements. Down to money at he end of the day, 200's are a bit cheaper and older

I've got a 300 but from what the 200 boys and girls have said on here either will be just fine. What is more important with a Disco is the state of the bodywork.

I went for an auto as well, my first one, and have no regrets having recently taken it off road (I only do moderate green laning).

200Tdi is a lot easier to work on and a lot more simple than a 300Tdi, and if set up correctly, will easily keep up with modern traffic.

i had a 200 and now i got a 300 but thinking of putting a 200 init much beta IMHO the only thing the 300 got beta is its quieter i found the 200 had more lowdown power beta MPG and easier to work on   :afro:

I have a 300tdi auto and get roughly 23mpg solo. Dr ed on here has a 200tdi manaual and easily gets 30mpg.

If I ever bought a disco again (which I wont be when this one dies as I am fed up of the damn thing) I would get a 300tdi and put a 200tdi engine in so you get the newer interior but the better engine.

Well i've got a 300 tdi and it does 30 mpg all day long with mud-terrians :D    But I remember one Instance of a 300 tdi going through deep water and water got into the timing case cover and the oil pump sucked up the water and goosed the engine. So in theory the 200 is better because the oil pump is located in a different place  :|

I would say that the 200TDi is a better engine - less mechanical problems than the 300. Getting a decent one is getting harder as they are an old engine now.

I have bfg at's. I think it could be the auto that makes it do bad mpg.

I love my 200tdi, can't think of anything else you can buy for the money, just gotta look to see how much welding it will need.

Either engine is a good lump if looked after, but for all those who say the 200 TDi is easier to work on, check out the price of a new head

Glad I had a 300 when it needed one ;)

I've never had a 200 so can't compare.

My 300Tdi does 30mpg, 80 mph, has enough grunt when I floor it and has been extremely reliable over its 163,000 miles. I dont think of it as a "difficult" engine to work on in any way.
Given the crappy 200tdi interior and the general age of the trucks, if I was buying again I'd go for a 300Tdi on an "R" plate.

I run an L- Reg 200 Disco and it will do me for my needs. No black boxes, no EGR valve and no Catalytic converter. Yes they getting hard to find without rot now but keep looking. I looked at two M & N reg 300,s that were rotten before I found mine. It went for its test the week before last and passed no problem. Due to my connections with Saab, other car, it went to them for test. One of the young lads at the garage said" that bag of scrap will never pass", he is now sorry he said that. Mine has done 90,000 now and has only had one hicup this year and that was the head gasket. Easy to fix and cheap for bits. My thinking being keep it cheep and simple. :D

Weve just bought a 300tdi auto (2/3 week ago) first 300 tdi and first auto   was very worried about mpg with it been auto but so far just doing short runs working out at 26mpg which impressed me, and much better interior in the 300s although  my old 200 tdi seemed a lot quicker but it was manual !!!!!
