Title: Suspension lift
Post by: V8MoneyPit on October 31, 2006, 14:45:16
Sarah is talking about a lift on her Td4. Looking back, there was a thread a while ago that mentioned Celtic 4x4. The web site says they only trade through eBay now. Couldn't find anything on there though. Does anyone know if they are still trading?

Celtic 4x4 do a lift kit and also a 'new' front recovery point
(http://www.mad-freelanders.org.uk/forum/uploaded/Big-G/2006102918423_recovery%20point%20006.jpg)

You can enquire on the Mad Freelanders Web Site (http://www.mad-freelanders.org.uk)

They look neat. Not sure Sarah would want me to cut into the bumper though  :D

She's just looking at a bit more clearance so the car doesn't bottom out getting around our fields.

The Bearmach kit is a bit pricey, but I would imagine it's excellent quality.

There is a US kit at £105 plus shipping.
http://www.straight-up-lifts.com/
But not much info on the web site. By the time it gets into the UK, it will be close to the Bearmach price anyway.

Wont be the first lady to want a couple of extra inches

http://www.celtic4x4.co.uk/ are up and running. but geraint (Big G) who runs it is also working away some of the time.. I have 50mm lift fitted and can definitely recommend it...Hard to see with shadows but rear wheel in photo about 3ft in air..Car is well used

That should give her enough clearance...

Any probs with contact then pm your details and I will pass them on.

Excellent! Thanks for that.

Is that the kit you are using? Easy to install?
Title: Suspension lift
Post by: Doobreydog on November 01, 2006, 17:39:55
Yes thats the kit and as you can see takes some hammer :D that was the easy lane of the day

About as easy as they come...main (big) bolts at base of suspesion legs needss a bit of force to get out but I assume it would have to come out on all...instructions are good and easy to follow...50mm kit needs small cut in inner wing to allow track rod clearance (40mm doesnt) but this is about the easiest bit to do and shouldnt put people off.

Hi Guys, I have had the Bearmach Lift kit fitted for some time and offroad /Green Lane quite often. If you do opt for their kit I would recommend fitting their camber pins, and taking it to a garage that can check the geometry too. Mine was a long way out after fitting and as I commute 140 miles a day, I couldn't afford to replace tyres any quicker than I already do !!

What tyres are you running? Would we get 215/75x15's on without mods? Or what about 235/75x15's?

I reckon the 215's would keep the gearing pretty much the same, so I suspect that would be preferable.

Just e-mailed Celtic 4x4 about the 50mm lift kit  :D
Title: Suspension lift
Post by: Doobreydog on November 22, 2006, 16:29:41
The ones in photos above are 215/80/r15 diamond back but do not think they would fit without a lift as they have nearly 20mm of tread  and personally would say profile was nearer 90 than the stated 80 and have diameter of about 30"

I do run a set of 205/80/r16 Avon ATs for general use which fit under with no lift, spacers or clearance problems and they have an overall diameter of 28.9"

As far as gearing/speed etc goes if you have a look at http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html you will find an excellent calculator.

For general Tyre/FL combinations see mad fl link below under mod/tech info.

Hope that helps

I haven't heard back from him. Maybe you'ld be kind enough to pass on my details and get him to give me a call when he gets a chance. We are definately in the market for one of his kits.

I'll PM my details.

Is 2" the most you can lift a freelander, or are there other mods you can do for better travel & clearance off road?
Title: Suspension lift
Post by: Doobreydog on November 30, 2006, 20:34:33
You can gain an extra 2" lift with tyres alone...but to lift suspension more you then need to start looking at extended brake lines and camber correction also stability of vehicle as centre of gravity will be raised even more.

I have found that with decent tyres and 2" lift my FL will go most places other LR will go and somtimes further

Ian, thanks for your help on this. I had a call from Geraint today. Nice guy and very helpful.

So 50mm it is..... and a set of 215/75x15 BFG AT's to go with it  :D Had a shop around for the tyres and was surprised to find my local outlet was cheapest I could find at £394.80 incl. VAT, fitting, balancing and valves (set of 4). Bronco were more than this with carriage and I'd still have to get them fitted. Even my work wholesaler couldn't match it.

Kit arrived today  :D

Looks fairly straight forward. However, there is no mention of cutting bodywork in the extensive instructions. I assume it will be below the track rods to allow clearance at full rebound?
Title: Suspension lift
Post by: Doobreydog on December 27, 2006, 18:23:40
Yes....you will probably only have to cut to one side of it then end it over...dont worry about the pastic bit that just pushes out of the way...piccys when yor done.

Could be a little while before I get to it. Got to clear the 110 out of the workshop first. But I'll try to remember to take before and after photos. Usually get half way though a job and then remember the 'before' photo

I am terrible at remembering to take notes/pictures while doing a job on a car! Quite apart from getting my SLR grubby! The kit is supplied with extensive instructions ..... reams of it actually! And it looks reasonably straight forward to fit.
If you fit the 40mm lift, I understand that no cutting is required. It's only the 50mm version that needs a little surgery.

Think it is fine with 40mm lift but my V6 (and believe it is faily common) had a banging noise prior to fitting lift that nobody could diagnose...only occured when dropping down off somthing and we noticed when fitting lift this was probably what was causing it and when we cut this bit it and fitted lift it sorted the problem out.

That's interesting. Ours makes a severe bang on rebound. Like if you hit a speed bump a bit too quickly and it bangs as it drops off the other side. I assumed it was the top strut mounting bush bottoming out.

That sounds like it ...had 3 """experts""" tell me there was nothing wrong as they would take car in jack it up look under not find anything then test drive it without being able to replicate....car would settle back oto suspension overnight and start the noise again...Add a few people and noise goes away completely probably cause car does not have same room for travel....fitting lift and cutting slightly has stopped bang completely. :D

enyway it would be the 50mm lift i'll be interested in.

have to say that my car seems to sit quit low compared to many other freelanders iv seen wondering if i it sagging at 72000 miles maybe need to think about new springs and or shocks.

they would not appear to have ever been replaced what d you think.

this is my first 4x4 so a bit new to all things dirty but one thnig sure off im hocked.
