Title: Freelander TD4 Bottled It
Post by: 300TDi Disco on July 30, 2009, 22:22:39
I was driving down the lanes to a mates house and came to this ford (hob lane) to find it was flowing. We have got a courtesy car at the moment and cant smoke in it so parked up. I then seen a ford fiesta 2009 tdci followed by a freelander TD4, fiesta gone through water went straight over the bonnet but made it, the Freelander turned round. [-X

what he is trying to say is, if you were in that situation and you were following a fiesta, would you follow it through the flood?? if not then you wouldnt deserve one,

and the answer still remains the same funny enough...

no i wouldnt follow a nutta in an unsuitable motor through it. lets face it if he got away with it doesnt mean the next one through would does it?

so i dont deserve the freelander then?

Right then,

According to the freelander owner guide that is in front of me. The maximum wading depth is 14inches. It says you can go further but need to take preparations.

Now if the water was over the bonnet of the Fiesta then its quite deep. Now as I know about fording and the consequences of getting it wrong I would not have gone through it either, especially if I was on the way to work, of shopping etc with no mates to help tow it or recover it.

Now some may say that then the freelander is rubbish, but mine is currently parked in a field on my farm down a rough track with the boot full of tyres for my other car and does eevry off road job I ever ask of it (on about a daily basis).

I admit that it was a sweeping statement, and all sweeping statements are false, and without knowing the road, the ford, and all the other variables it's impossible to make an informed comment - not that it stops journalists (sorry, that's another one... )

What I was meaning is that there are lots of Freelanders (and other, generic 4x4s) who are driven by people who forget what they are designed and able to do.

I've lost count of the times I've come head-to-head with one on a single track road and had to climb on to the verge in my (then) conventional car, a SEAT Cordoba, because the 4x4 driver wouldn't. It's happened when I've been towing a trailer too.

The one time I tried to negotiate, the lady driving it said she didn't want to go on the grass in case she got stuck...

Why do they waste money on buying and running a 4x4?  :-.

point taken mate  ;)... and i do know what you mean on the head to head situation

if we had the money to fix the freelander and equipe it then im sure we would give it ago. ( although the misses might not like her truck used that way ). we have the disco that we use for playing in so that we have a nice truck to head out in at the weekends.... one for best so to speak.....

i hate friday jokes.....makes me feel happy and i really dont want to smile  :P

there is a model of Fiesta that can go though deep water and go further down a green lane than most 4X4's

the model is

STOLEN

Usually reconisable by the burnt out shell in the middle of nowhere

One of my mates said that top gear did something with the new fiesta and water. Was it diesel or petrol?

Done something?

It was in LRO a while back!

The army gave it a complete waterproof kit, the same as they do to a 'sea going' 90.

There was an article about them in LRO and they mentioned a waterproofing job on a Fiesta for top gear :)

Ah, that explains a lot. I found it hard to believe it would survive the drowning otherwise.

So how long before someone tries to sue the BBC when they drown their Fiesta in 3 feet of water?

Sorry to be a pedant, but it was the Royal Marines that waterproofed it.  I was working at a Ford garage at the time that was shown on tv and spent the next week spending way too much timeunder the bonnet of the new Fiestas trying to figure out how they did it.  It didn't occur to me until the LRO feature that the Booties might have fettled the Fiesta, and I work withe them all the time.
