I have just fitted a set of 245/70/16 tyres to the Disco, any idea what the road pressure should be, also am I correct in thinking taking them down to 20 for off road. They are Yokohama Geolander M/T's ...thanks in advance

Hi ya.
The tyre pressure spec for 235/70 R16 from the Haynes manual is 28 front & 34 back. No mention of different pressures for differing bias, i.e. MT versus AT.
Is it correct that the tyre ply rating determines the category, MT/AT? or am I confusing Bush Tucker Mans post? :?

MT = Mud Terrain
AT = All Terrain
As I've mentioned before, once you have a starting point I find the following a useful check.
Draw a line about 1" thick across the tyre tread with chalk and go for a short drive (maybe 1/4 mile)
You should see the chalk line wear evenly. If it wears more in the centre, the tyre is over-inflated, if it wears at the edges, the tyre is under-inflated.
Adjust the pressure to suit, and once you are happy, measure it and make a note.
It's not incredibly precise, but it will give you some idea of the correct pressure for *your* vehicle and *your* tyres.
Manufacturers pressures only relate to a standard vehicle on factory tyres. Once you start modifying, etc... you will have an effect.

Um... just in case it isn't obvious... this doesn't work on wet roads... it just washes all the chalk off ;-)

Sounds like a good idea Tim, but the roads here are so bad in places, and can be just dirt tracks, that I think the chalk would be gone before I would have gone 1k :shock:

And standard pressures don't take account of things like winches or LPG tanks! You may also find different brands of tyre work best at different pressures.

No noticeable wear after almost 15,000miles at the same pressures

Does anyone else run on 245/70/16's they are a very common size out here. all of the 4x4 pickup trucks seem to run on them?

A certain 200 Tdi Discovery I am nursing at the moment has them on. But they don't seem to be especially popular over here. Actually... no you have got me thinking... they might be 75s... hang on....
No.. I've just checked these are 245/75 16... and it's cold outside :oops:
