Title: Series Diesel Glow Plugs
Post by: Hightower on April 15, 2010, 14:45:23
Am having to rewire most of the Series 3 (which has experienced some over heating in the loom at some point) and have a query about the ignition wiring.

I understand the brown (+ve feed), white/red (starter solenoid) and white wires (electrical systems) and what they do, but am not sure what to do with the brown/red wire which feeds the glow plugs.

When the key is turned for ignition does it go through the following:
position 1 - feed to white wire
position 2 - feed to brown/red wire
position 3 - feed to white/red (to crank engine, then key returns to position 2)

If this is the case then does the feed to the glow plugs remain on until the key is turned off, or is it somehow turned off once the engine is started?

Can anybody help explain it to me please?

position 1 is the normal running position, the key should return to there once the engine has started.
if it doesnt, then maybe you have the petrol version of the ignition switch?
