Title: lightweight hub bearings/seal leaking
Post by: lightweight-love on August 30, 2009, 15:58:20
The rear axle on my lightweight is leaking just too much to ignore now, I think its called the hub oil seal? it basically is leaking oil from the end of the axle casing, Im unable to find much info on lightweight hubs as they different to series 3 ones, but i know theres no lock nuts etc, so is there still an oil seal to replace? or is it just the gasket that keeps the oil in!?

if it's the hub seal it'll be leaking out into the brake drum and dripping onto the inside of the wheel rim....

to replace you'll want to remove the wheel, brakedrum and halfshaft, at which time you'll find the hub nut(s) and locking plate that hold the hub on...

remove those and pull the hub off the stu axle, in the back of the hub is the hubseal which can be carefully prised out and replaced with new (carefully drive it in squarely) then reassemble in the reverse order with a new lock washer/plate....

don't forget to clean up carefully or replace the brake shoes (i use synthetic or cellulose thinners to kill oils on brake shoes)

No oil is venturing into the brakes, its only coming out the very end of the axle past this gasket and onto outside of the wheel, maybe it is just the gasket thats gone and there aint a seal for it. I may just take apart n investigate!

ok it's just a case of remove the 6 bolts and draw the halfshaft out and replace the paper gasket, don't forget to top the oil level back up once you've finished ....

half an hour to replace both gaskets (both ends of the axle) and top the oil up, a nice easy job

Nice easy job? never had one of them!
looking on paddocks, think they called drive member/hub gasket need some new bolts too it seems.
bit of gasket sealant may help too!
