Title: Coughing, spluttering and it back fires....
Post by: blueboar on June 30, 2008, 09:27:12
On our series 2a we have a Ford Capri 3 litre V6 engine with Weber carbs, we have changed all the gaskets and stripped the carbs down and cleaned them out.

We found sand in the main jets and cleaned it out. The engine now ticks over at 950 revs and not 2000!, but there is still some coughing, spluttering and it back fires....

Anyone any ideas on what to do next??

Many thanks

Have you flushed out the fuel tank and the fuel lines?  That sand must have come from somewhere and  cant be a good thing!

Sand in the engine won't have done it good either.

I presume you have checked the basics like ignition and mixture?

I am sure I have seen something about "balancing carbs" and generally setting them up. I think the issue is that they have quite fine adjustment and they all need to be in sync or you will get dody running.  I think I saw Mark whatsit do this on one of the is born TV shows. I think this only applies if you have spliit carbs like banks on a V formation or 2 carbs on a straight 4.

It needs a flow meter that shows which bank is pulling most air and they need to be equalized.  A bloke in my sprint class had an old car that was refurbed and the carbs needed to be set up as well and his normal mechanic could not do it and he is by no means an ameteur so I think its no 5 min job.

As you can tell, I have never done this myself! (armchair mechanic)

Then I recommend checking the ignition system, particularly if it is using a mechanical distributor and static timing.  ;)

On the BMW Boxer engine, we had to strip both carbs down and rebuild them a second time because they were almost impossible to get to near the correct settings.  Once they had been rebuilt again and were fitted, it took about thirty minutes to set the carbs up and it ran as it should.  It's just time consuming.
