Title: idle problem!
Post by: Bobster on October 20, 2005, 22:56:22
Managed to get the Bobster running pritty sweet at last....the fuel mix was way off and the timing up the wall  the last owner was a complete monkey by the looks of things.... fitted the electronic ignition and a new coil and he's purs like a kitten.........then dies!!!!! NOOOOOOOO its a real wierd one! it can run for a few mins then just dies and restarts instantly if you turn the key again... any ideas? its not the new ignition....I put the points and condenser back in and it did the same...lol

This sounds more like the carb, crap in the idle jet/ float chamber.

What carb are you running?

also sounds like you may have a dirty filter. If it don't get fuel it won't run.... Cheep enough to do change the filter if you have not. You may find rust in there. My landy was not even doing 40mph yesterday because of a dirty filter. Its now back on form....85mph and that is a 2.25 Diesel....90 diffs mate works a treat....
Could even be a blocked exhaust that has been found before. But before you pull the carb in bits get a new filter in it.

what happens if you keep it revved?

The pump may be delivering some fuel, but not enough under load

If you have an electric one you can drop inline might be worth a try, or get someone to  turn the engine over with the pipe off the carb and check the flow out

If I keep bliping the pedal it keeps running ......but as soon as I stop it idles for 30ish secs then stalls.......It does sound like a fuel problem doesn't it ! but I just can't put my finger on it

Try replacing the Zenith (nasty things that leak more than a webber) with the SU 1.75"

Works well on mine, more power less leakage and yes, crap in the float chamber.

How long since the last rebuild of the engine?

Not sure when the engine was last in bits James! but I would consider the SU 1.75'' convertion have you got any more info on whats required? or any pics?

I will get pics at the weekend and send to you, got mine from ACR (see LRO) for about £400, worth every penny although fiddly to set up initially

£400.............EEk that twice as much as i paid for the whole thing...lol still interestead in the convertion though, I just pulled off the carb and stripped it and its in really good condition...it nice and clean in there so I don't think its the carb got me baffled this one and I am usually pretty good with older stuff :?:
