Title: Series 3 Diesel - Smoke
Post by: MattW on July 13, 2005, 12:20:53
Hi all

I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I just bought an E reg 2.25D series 3 ( details here- www.willmottw.fsnet.co.uk ) which has clearly been standing for a long time. It starts first time but it smokes well. We've put 35 miles on it since we've had it and the smoking has reduced in that time although it is still particuarly bad in low range and when the engine is revving or under load. We're prepared to strip the engine to have a look but I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to what we should look for? injectors? piston rings? faulty gaskets?

thanks
Matt

if it's black then that is unburnt fuel, so the easiest thing to check first is the injectors!!
if you take them out of the head and look at the tips you'll be able to see if the tips look o.k. and all look the same. if one is blacker than the others it could be that at fault, failing that you could borrow another set off someone and try them or take them to a diesel specialist and get them tested.
when it is smoking does it sound like the engine is misfiring and is it any better once it gets upto running temperature?
