Title: removal of front prop
Post by: beast5680 on September 23, 2007, 14:57:27
not really a problem removing the prop but with a viscous centre diff how long can you run without the front prop on the car before damage occurs?
friend of mine had his front uj screw up the front prop so i removed it for him as a temp fix as he was going to replace it, 5 weeks on and he still hasnt replaced it i found out the other day so is it being damaged by this ?

Eventually yes but I couldn't say how long.  The viscous will be slipping just a little all the time and the fluid will be getting hot.  Eventually it turns into hard little balls of rubber that jam up the unit and then you are in trouble.  Could be the unit was goosed beforehand, did he check it wasn't the cause of the UJ?

They can be swapped by taking the front end off the box without removing it from the car.

when i looked at it for him the coupling seemed to be working as it should it was the lack of grease in the uj i think that killed it   he had the car 3 years before he realised there were grease nipples on it, i,ll tell him to get it sorted then

cheers
