Hi all, We have a 2001 TD4 ES spec motor (called Flo :lol: )
I was chatting to a person today who seems to think that as our vehicle is fitted with a diesel powered heater thingy ( i love official titles fotr items :lol:)
It exhaust comes out just in front of the n/side front wheel, Any how he reckons it can be modded to run before the car is being used Ie - to preheat the water system ??
Anyone heard of this mod before ? sure would be good for de-icing,engine life :-k

The "pre heater" is actually a "fuel burning heater", this is simply to boost the cab heating as desiel cars run cooler than petrol so it just makes the cab warmer and also scares the crap out of people at petrol stations when you pull up next to a pump with smoke blowing out the bonnet.
I would be surprised to think it could pre heat the engine colling system without serious modification to pipe work etc, it could pre heat the cab on a timer but as it would be using the battery to run the fan (not sure how the heater water is cuirculated) I would suggest you would need a decent battery as well.
I think most freebies with this have heated seats as part of the "climate pack" so I doubt its worth it unless you live somewhere very very cold.

The Fuel Burning Heater (FBH) is actually designed for the engine to speed up warn up times etc. Its true it does warm the car up as a by product (it's plumbed into the cars cooling system). They were fitted to all TD4s (i believe) with or without the climate pack up to a certain point, mine is a 51 plate and has it, my brothers is a 53 and has not? mine is GS his is ES.
To run it must have all of the following conditions met:
1. Engine Running
2. Coolant Temp below 70 deg C
3. Outside Air Temperature below 5 deg C.
There have been several threads on here about manual control by disconecting the OAT sensor and replacing it with a cab mounted switch.
Gona do the mod myself at some point, but not yet.

oh dear, im sure I read my stuff in the sales brochure, still they prob wrote that for numpties (me included it appears) who would wonder why you'd want a warm engine and cold toes.

Except it also stays running sometimes when the engine is switched off. Why's that?

I think its cooling down :-k MAinly cause the exhaust gas is pretty hot when running, but cooler after the engine stopped
Or i could be talking out of me butt again :lol:
Would like to mod it to pre run before i get in the car ( so to speak)

you can get a timer for the fbh which allows you to programme it to come on and 'preheat' before you get up on a frosty morning :) - and there is also a remote switch available for it

Tell me more :-k I like the sound of a seperate switch idea :) Do you reckon anyone at a main stealers would have any knowledge of this ? or would i be talking Swahili to them as usual :lol:

Well thank you. Land Rover UK have at least 10 in stock of which I have just got one ordered from Hunters Norwich. List Price is as follows;
Timer kit IRK 500020 £97.09 +VAT Hunters doing it for £86+VAT
Remote control system IRK 500010 £324.25+VAT Wont be buying that then!!!!
I'll let you know how the fitting goes.
