Title: speedo showing speeds not possible in a Landy
Post by: muddyjames on January 08, 2005, 14:43:02: I have now replaced the speedo cable twice due to it snapping twice. The first time I replaced it, it bounced around showing wierd speeds then I gave it a clean and it was beautiful. It didn't bounce and showed the speed I was doing then 10 miles later the cable broke. After replacing it again it is bouncing around again. When I am in 2nd gear on tick over the speedo shows my speed from 20mph up 90mph and just bounces between these 2 speeds. I have put a drill on the back of the speedo and it doesn't bounce then. Any ideas on how I can get a more accurate reading?

After I have paid out for road tax and an Mot for my other car I am hoping to do over time at work until it comes out of my ears and save up for a GPS, but at the moment I am going to have to stick with guessing the speed.

Post by: muddyweb on January 08, 2005, 17:35:48: Could well be a problem with the worm drive in the output of the transfer box.

They are only on a friction drive so if they get covered in oil then it can become erratic.

Wouldn't explain the cable snapping, that is more likely to be a sticking speedo. It might be that the speedo is faulty, and causing the worm drive to slip.. put a drill on it and you "overpower" the speedo so it looks OK.

Might be worth trying a different speedo.

Post by: muddyjames on January 08, 2005, 17:38:47: I do reguarly take the speedo cable out and clean the gear box end as it does continually get covered in oil. if it is something i the gear box i bet it is not cheap to sort out

The worm drive fix isn't expensive, just time consuming.

Post by: muddyjames on January 08, 2005, 17:45:29: wouldn't putting the drill on the back prove the speedo is fine? I put the drill on a broken bit of cable then put it in the speedo.

The speedo cable and worm drive is designed to turn the speedo...

If the speedo is stiff, the worm drive might not be able to turn it consistently, whereas the drill would easily.

Post by: muddyjames on January 09, 2005, 10:43:57: I replaced the cable outer and inner and I have tried to make it so there are no sharp corners in the route i have done. I think the first cable i relaced broke due to it had a sharp corner behind the speedo its self where i puled to much through the bulk head.
