1998 300 Defender
Some strange metallic noises occur intermittantly from this area. No problem selecting gears. Occasional bump and click sound when moving off.
Gearbox or transfer box on way out?
Best course of action?
All help appreciated.

Bump and click suggest one or more prop shaft universal joints, lift one wheel per axle and rotate appropriate prop back and forth by hand to check for play.

Mr Lambert Sir,
I will do exacerly as you suggest for a start. If I know all the UJs are good then take it from there. Other than the bump and click the other noise seems in time with propshaft, its a spinning tinkleing sound that comes and goes! Could this be down to a driveshaft UJ? One near the transfer box? Thanks so far by the way.

If its coming from the front of the vehicle it could also be a CV joint. They make a tinkleing sound when on lock as they start to fail.

Thanks Mike. Is CV same as swivel? How would I check for possible failure?
-
Cv is the gubbins inside the swivel. You can sometimes feel if the Cv is dying by rotating the wheel on full lock listening and feeling for notches clicking but not always. That said they are not that hard to strip down.

Right then chaps thats my plan of action sorted.
Tomorow afternoon get the Truck on my mates ramp and realy give the UJs a good examination and change any suspected of wear.
Inspect the swivel joints.Cvs for any signs of wear. strip down and inspect swivel joint gubbins when time available.
Very grateful for you guys taking the time and effort to post a reply. Will keep you updated.

My money is on Mr Coverdale's UJ's.... well, not his UJ's. I don't know him that well

Just to update...
Had the truck up on the ramp and found play in the rear prop-shaft UJ`s. Went to my local guys (AMD) at Merrylees and got the GKN ones with nipples for eight pound a piece. Decided to do front as well while we were at it so got four new UJ`s. Pretty straight forward job except for the fine threaded bolts that come out of the transfer box front and rear. Got away with the rear ones but the threads on the front ones were shaggged so we replaced these.
Greased all the joints and splines and took it for a test run ........ sorted.
Just leaves me to say thank you to the boys who took the time and trouble to reply to my request for advice...... Lambert, Mike, and Mr Moneypit. Thank you.
