Title: 'A Grand Day Out'
Post by: Bush Tucker Man on June 06, 2004, 00:22:12
I was given 'Day Release' today, as I wanted to head into deepest darkest Lincolnshire.
I must have asked very nicely (or begged), as I was even provided with sandwiches & a flask!

2 hours saw me down the A1 to Newark & then the A17 to Sleaford, and along the A153 to.............

......

Let me say it was worth it for the sound alone.....

Richard

Nice pics, must go back there myself, been a long time since I went in, although used to go past it all the time when running to and from the coast.

You want to take a run Further down to Duxford if you haven't already been there, I went there about 10 years ago, and is supposed to be a lot more there now than back then

Hi Kevin.
No I haven't been to Duxford.

The sound of those Merlins as they were started one-by-one & then ran up to operating temperature was wonderful.
It taxied about 200yards & turned.
On the return it was stopped & brakes applied. Then the engines were run to about 1500rpm(?)
It was enough to set the tail-lane twitching laterally & the rear jockey-wheel bouncing almost off the ground!

Then the Spitfire put an appearance in........... :D
A low-level, head-on approach!
That Merlin growling as it barrel-rolled, need I say more??

I Agree Richard

There is nothing like them, I live right next to Hucknall Airfield, which is owned by Rolls Royce, back in the 60's and 70's they had air shows, but there was always comings and goings there, especially Spits and Hurricanes for service and checks. The Lanc came in now and again, I remember standing at the track at the end of the runway when it landed passed about 30ft  above me, what a rush, when it took off it would rev up to start its run and i could bearely hold onto the fence

They  had all sorts in the hanger there, my friend's father worked there and we used to get in with him to have a look round, you walked into the hanger and there was a VC-10 with an experimental RB211 engine on one side of the fuselage, and the small twin jets on the other, they were doing the tests on them still. But under the wing was a spitfire on one side and a Hurricane on the other, being stored and worked on for the winter, it was a lovely sight

I can still remember that, it must have been late 60s early 70s time

'Just Jane' (NXC 611) the East Kirkby Lancaster is the ex 'Gate Guardian'r fom RAF Scampton.
The Pantons aquired it (By whatever means) & restored it.
